Paul Bley/Jimmy Giuffre?

I found the article on Bley in this month's Wire very provocative... had a lot of insight into Ornette and Ayler while making a feisty case for frequent Bley collaborator Jimmy Guiffre as their undeservedly overlooked equal, creating "quiet" free jazz that was a lot less fashionable than the more agressive work of his peers.I remember when I was first getting into jazz a serious jazzhead friend of mine played me Free Fall and I flipped out over it, telling him I liked it better than the Coltrane record he'd just spun for me. My friend shot me a look like I had just taken a crap on his turntable. 15 years later, I might not be prepared to recommit to my Coltrane blasphemy, but I still hold the record in the highest regard. Thoughts on their work and/or this article (for those who also read it)? Other unsung heroes of free jazz whose work still sounds fresh?
