thought I would start a (hopefully) recurring thread of mixes. Bakers Dozen...pick a genre, record your favorite 13 tunes from a specific genre, post 'em, and post a little info about the tunes. So, here is my first entry:King Coleman "Down in the Basement" (togo) hipped to me by High-C a couple years ago, early 60s R&B doesnt get much tougher than this, a killer track...Big Maybelle "Ive got a feeling" (Okeh) Shingaling played me this 78 to me a few years ago, truly a jaw dropper...recorded in Janurary 1954! Rough son.....Versatones "Bila"(Atlantic) This weird-ass but wonderful doo-wop slice of R&B was released a few time on a few different labels since its original release in 1958...one of the greatest records ever pressed...Im seriousDenotations "Nena" (Lawn) Dont know much about this latin flavored doo wop killer outta 60s Philadelphia, all I know is that I like it a lot (the flip "Lone Stranger" is equally as cool)Carvettes "Never Gonna Leave Me" (copa) the sound of early 60s Mississippi rock n roll. In 10 years time, these guys would be known to soul music fans as the Moments.Richard Berry and the Pharoahs "Have Love Will Travel" (Flip) pretty darn raer in its OG form. Covered by many many people, this is the original. Also, one of the greatest songs ever written IMO. Perfect.Gladys Knight and the Pips "Room in Your Heart"(Fury) a 16 year old Gladys beltin it out on this one. The flip to their top 10 R&B hit "Every Beat of your Heart" from '61.Mitty Collier "My Babe" (Chess) Tougher than tough tune from Ms. Collier. A bazillion versions of this Willie Dixon RnB standard...this is one of the best.Charles James "One Mint Julep" (ZAB) Dumb raer Memphis R&B. Once again a top shelf version of a standard made famous by the likes of many. Lee Rogers "Troubles" (MAH) dont know much about this except that Lee has a bunch of records and that this is killer. Otis Rush "All of your loving(I miss loving)"(Cobra) A song that gets butchered to death by tourist friendly "blueshammer" bands the world over. The original is sleazy and amazing.Ike and Tina Turner "I Idolize You" (Sue) forget the Phil Spector produced one from the "River Deep Mountain High" era...it sucks IMO. This is an earlier version and my favorite Ikeand Tina song. For some reason Tina stopped singing like this after her Sue era. This is her at her roughest.Rosco Gordon "Sit Right Here" (unreleased Vee Jay session) Memphis' master of R&B went north to Chicago and recorded this for Vee Jay in the early 60s. It never saw the light of day as far as I know until an Charly comp of Rosco's Vee Jay recordings fom the 80s. Why this isnt on a 45 is a sin. Too cool.Enjoy! (Then post some tunes!)

there's no silence inbetween songs, but it isnt beat matched or anything..tried to keep tempos kinda steady, but it isnt "mixed" as in blends and things..."mix" as in compilation.

You could try running through a proxy, assuming they haven't blocked all of those too.
    Try this one:
    http://www.23proxy.com/

You could also run Hamachi assuming those ports aren't blocked also. Hamachi is the shit (and its FREE). It sets up a virtual VPN between two computers and traverses through NAT and firewalls. Just install, setup a network name and password, then join the two (or more). It takes minutes to do. I run Hamachi on all of my computers. Usually I just remote desktop to my home computer then do everything I'm not supposed to be doing at work on it.

Point Your Finger & Scream Go! ??? A taste of Hardcore 1981-1990
Well, collecting Punk & Hardcore 7???s through skateboarding is what really got me into record collecting & really whetted my appetite for the 7??? format (I still kind of hate LPs in a way). I was going through my 45s the other day & thought what a lot of this crap I still had filed, no seriously there are still a hundred or so plus hardcore 7???s spread amongst my funk, soul, R&B & jazz 45s. I still find myself picking them up for cheap if I see them too. So although I???m always getting rid of stuff I think hardcore punk is probably with me for the long run in some shape or sound. I think I only got to the start of the letter ???D??? of the alphabet with these & even then I left most of the more ???well known??? bands out. So enjoy something of a taste of hardcore that covers some of the forgotten bands (yeah I know there are a couple of big names too) of a pretty healthy pre-Nirvana underground alternative scene. Disclaimer: This music may make you want to run around & smash stuff, you have been warned.

Dead Kennedys ??? Nazi Punks F*ck Off
This one is the earliest track here & is still a great example of angry American hardcore. A band whose importance cannot be understated. I like all their records.

    Cause For Alarm ??? Parasite
From 1983 and the New York scene. These guys really encapsulated that whole early 80s NY sound really well. Unfortunately this is the reissue as the original has just a black & white cover. Along with Agnostic Front & Warzone, CFA are probably one of my favourites to come out of the early NYHC scene.

    7 Seconds ??? 5 Years Of Lies
Possibly my favourite hardcore band ever, 7 Seconds really embody what it is all about for me. Still going today too. Great stuff.

    Deep Wound ??? Deep Wound
Known primarily for being the band that gave us J Mascis & Lou Barlow these days. The Deep Wound 7??? is a killer release.

Beyond Possession ??? What???s The Matter?
Canadian skatecore from 1985, I don???t know much about these guys apart from owning this 7???. Just one of a number or great Canadian hardcore bands (DOA, SNFU, Dayglo Abortions etc etc).

Bad Attitude ??? Narrow Minded Way
German band from 1987, I just bought this fairly recently, as you can see hardcore had spread like a plague all over the world by the mid 80s. There were a bunch of other good German bands too.

Alone In A Crowd ??? Is Anybody There?
This band was sort of seen as something of a New York all-star band at the time (88). Definitely the late 80s sound. The legend has it that they only released this record & played one show (with Judge & Chain Of Strength at the Anthrax in CT).

Chemical People ??? Who Killed Marilyn
Californian band known more for their advocacy of pornography & humour instead of their great melodic songs. Here they cover Danzig???s first solo single for a 1988 fan club only 7???.

Carry Nation ??? Face The Nation
Dan O???Mahony is something of a straight edge hardcore figurehead & this is his band???s last gasp from 1989. Kind of an all-star late 80???s So-Cal lineup which also features Steve from Insted on drums.

    Awake! ??? By The Horns
Starting to push the barriers towards a more metal influenced sound, Awake were a Florida hardcore band who released this 7??? in 1989.

    411 ??? Say It
Dan O???Mahony???s next band were a more melodic beast with the influence of bands like Bad Religion, All & Dag Nasty starting to come through a bit by 1990.

    Billingsgate ??? Holdstrong
From 1990 this was the 2nd record on the then small but now very large Victory label out of Chicago. Fast hardcore but these guys also had a bit of a metal influence at times, I think I still have their LP around somewhere too.

    Blind Spot ??? Payback Time
A 1990 Conversion Records release, Conversion were a pretty cool Californian label & Blind Spot were just one Californian band of the time who really had a good sound. Just after 1990 a lot of bands started coming through playing a slower more metal influenced version of the music & some of Blind Spot???s stuff is hinting toward this sound.

    wow great!
this takes me back, its like an audio version of an 80s issue of maximunrocknroll

shit, 411! My old high school buddy played guitar in that band.

    b/w

Kr*s, did you know the entire Alone in the Crowd show at Anthrax is on youtube?

Not the most impressive set, but a fun viewing ... and the 7" is good NYHC.

What other bands were they from that made them a "supergroup?"

  • holmesholmes 3,532 Posts
Wow, I didn't know the show was filmed, I'll have to check that out. Anyways, members of Alone In A Crowd from what I can gather either came from or would go on to these bands. Vocalist Jules was from Side By Side, Guitarist Lars was from Judge & would also do Uppercut & Killing Time, Guitarist Howie went on to play in Moondog which was the earliest incarnation of Quicksand, Bassist Carl came from Raw Deal/Killing Time & went on to Breakdown & Mind's Eye, Drummer Rob went on to Uppercut & Minds Eye & later on Electric Frankenstein. Thanks to band 2 band for some info I didn't know.

Love live life + 1 - The Question mark

This track is a beast. Kimio Mizutani kills it.
"I walk into the world, and they called me human being, a human being, a human being.."

    Hiro Yanagida - The Skyscraper 42nd F

I keep coming back to this song from Hiro Yanagida. It feels well ahead of it's time almost like it wouldn't be out of place on a DAEDELUS album. He was like the go to guy for psychedelic piano in groups like FOODBRAIN, APRYL FOOL, TOKYO KID BROTHERS. On this song he hardly plays piano, makes twinkling sounds, slams his hands on the piano, and everything a classical japanese pianist wouldn't do is pretty much what he does.

Sadistic Mika Band - Silver Child

Recognize those DRUMS? Oh shit me too. The Mika band is probably the funkiest band on this list. They're like the jap sly and the family serious, check this shit out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwfxongUQfk

Christine 23 Onna - Wild private

This is some funky psychedelic 2002 shit. Yamazaki Maso(AKA MASONNA/SPACE MACHINE) on oscillating noises & Toda Fusao(Acid eater/Angelin'heavy syrup) on guitar. Masonna is a weird noise dude who's into psych moves and works at a record store, and Fusao is a psychedlic guitar player who runs the Freak Scene vintage clothing store in OSAKA. Her store looks incredible wall display of Can's future days, vintage japanese porn and clothes straight off the Austin Powers set.

Blues creation - Baby please don't go

This track is hard as F*ck recorded as a bonus track for the CARMEN MAKI LP during the DEMON and ELEVEN children sessions. This is BC at there best IMO. These dudes were head of the class in the hendrix school of blues rock. If facemelting guitar isn't your thing skip this track.

    Magical power Mako - Flying

Makoto Kurita is like 17 years old when he put this song together. Child prodigy much?

KUNI KAWACHI & Flower Traveling Band - To your world

Yuya Uchida hooked Kuni Kawachi(former leader of the happenings four) the F*ck up with making his backing band formerly called The Flowers into the FLOWER TRAVELING BAND. Unfortunately Kuni ultimately wasn't happy with it so this album was unreleased. Whatever, Joe kills it.

Carmen Maki & Blues Creation - I Can't Live For Today

This is the best song from the Carmen maki LP. Horrible girl singer/actor with Blues creation in there prime backing her.

Apryl Fool - The Lost Mother Land (Part-1)

The last bit of this song was in a BROADCAST mix and it took me maybe 2 years to hunt this shit down. This is one of those gem of a songs that is just the right kind of psychedelic. ORGANS/PHASER/DELAYS I've been looking for shit like this forever. Hiro yanagida proving he's the best.

    People - Shomyo Pt.1

I first found out about this band, because the Intro and Outro of there album SAMPLES Axelrod's Songs of Innocence LP. Kimio Mizutani shows Japan how to REALLY use Fuzz and a WAH. So I'm guessing these were a bunch of weed smoking Axelrod fans into psych guitar and buddha. This is my shit.

TOKYO KID BROTHERS - song 5

This is a weird hippy film concept album that features Kuni kawachi, Hiro yanagida, JA CEASER, and Hideki ishima from Flower traveling band on guitar. You really gotta check out the movie that goes with it:

Flower travellin' band - Satori part 3

Which leads me to my favorite japrock band. Flower travellin band. They went from being a cliche 60's rock cover band to becoming the equivelent to Japan's Led zeppelin/Black sabbath. They're actually reunited and touring right now with Radio Moscow. I hope I get a chance to see them.

Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow

This song came out last year. This is boris's best track IMO. Michio peels your face off with his fuzz pedal This song deserves to be played loud. His guitar is actually my cellphones ringtone.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A8EKONRF

This was originally a little mix of my favorite japanese tracks to give to my drummer. I added a couple of tracks and decided it to make it my baker's dozen. I'm too lazy to mix this one, but the last controller 7 mix that had the individual tracks was ill anyways. Word up to Julian cope, Dirk from cities on flame and my buddy AKI.

    - Spidey

  • oh shit!!!! this is just the ticket.... i'm familiar with some of the songs on here, but not many. really looking forward to giving these a listen whilst cycling about. thanks a lot!!

Woah.. I guess the strut is just not into that Japanese psychedelic shit right now. Oh well..
