So if you turn in bottles in Michigan, do they have to be Michigan bottles to get the .10 per bottle or can they be from other states? I drink alot of beer and could probably fund a nice little digging trip with a few months worth...what's the deal?

Many people have tried this before and Michigan has taken many ways to prevent this.
Specifically: The barcodes of each bottle are recorded in a 'bottle return computer system' as to which state the bottle was initially sold in. So if you try to return a bottle which was purchased from Indiana, the machine will reject it. The only chance you have of the scam working is by finding a grocery store which is too old/poor to have the computerized system. But 99% of them have it these days. And if you did find a place willing to accept bottles by not checking them, you would be seriously screwing over some 'mom and pop' store.

...so sorry charlie, you are about 20 years late on the scam.

    yeah, what this guy said...
heck, that scanner won't accept the bottle if it can't read the barcode - purchased in Michigan or not. I get so pissed about that.
