Hey,I know that period in music from about 1977-83 was tricky with the (often) wack influence from disco. But from EWF thread, name some of your non-disco joints from soul/R&B artists of that time period. I'll start off:-"Off the Wall" and "Thriller"-Michael Jackson.-"The Dude"-Quincy Jones.-"Never Too Much"-Luther Vandross.-"Cameosis" and "Feel Me"-Cameo.-"One Nation Under a Groove" and "Uncle Jam Wants You"-Funkadelic.-"S/T"-Zapp.-"III" and "IV"-The Gap Band.-"Between the Sheets"-The Isley Brothers.-"Ask Rufus"-Rufus ft/ Chaka Khan.-"You're the One for Me"-D-Train.-"At Peace with Woman"-The Jones Girls.-"Hurry Up this Way Again"-The Stylistics.-"The Belle Album"-Al Green.-"Menagerie"-Bill Withers.-"All in All"-Earth, Wind, & Fire.-"Better Part of Me"-Clifford Coulter.-"Minnie"-Minnie Riperton.-"Right on Time" and "Light Up the Night"-The Brothers Johnson.-"S/T"-Brick.-"Give Me the Night"-George Benson.-"In the Nighttime"-Michael Henderson.-"All this Love"-DeBarge.-"S/T"-Switch.That's enough for now, I'll name more later.

That great OV Wright LP on Hi from about 77 or 78 that is decidedly un-disco.

  • Related to Luther, I'll say Change, even though they get thrown into the disco.

Kashif, although I know peoople classify him as either modern or boogie.

    Odyssey? Patrice Rushen?

    "Better Part of Me"-Clifford Coulter.

    Yes.

I've come to realize that Clifford Coulter is an artist
of incredible depth. Didn't he do alot of production work, also?

    Hey,

Good call on the Patrice Rushen. I almost named Change, but I thought it would be considered disco by some. Great call on the Teddy Pendergrass ("Come here, baby!!!!"). I must add:

-"Barry White Sings for Someone You Love"-Barry White.

    word...

that first one w/ "the whole town's laughing at me" is dope as hell...

in a similar vibe, that Syvester LP w/ with the white background and the sunglasses is pretty great...

this album is really really bad

for the price of LA will make you Pay, I'd rather get 100 copies of this instead

  • If you can procure a copy of Burton Inc, I will trade you 100 copies of Carl Carlton. I'll even through in 20 copies of "She's A Bad Mama Jama" on 12".

    CHECK PMZ!

Gonna Dance 'Til We Burn This Disco Out

    [Chorus]
    Groove All Night
    Keep The Boogie Alright
    Get That Sound

    Gonna Dance, Gonna Shout
    Gonna Burn This Disco Out

i just found this for $5, so great
does this qualify as a 'find'

ps: i still think much of this thread is just disco. i mean it was basically the R&B sound of the era. It would be like saying "non-breakbeat R&B of the early 90s," basically just means only (some) ballads.

When I listen to that album on record, I'm still almost anticipating 8-track tape breaks.

That's the one...played the hell out of it when I was a kid. In fact, for a good while it was only one of two 8-tracks that I owned and I didn't have a record player yet.
