Who knows about the spots that are not serving sushi and teriyaki? I want a mean egg don, and I want to know where to get it. While I'm on the subject of food, does anyone know any good Ital restaurants?

That's Little Korea/Koreatown.
U might want to check the around St.Marks/E.Village like someone said.
"Japantown" is what Ive heard in the streets.

rockmeisha izakaya

minca
setagaya

There is no competition. NONE.
I would not recommend.
the broth is really really heavy, I don't think there's much msg in it. It's just the layers and layers of fat in it that gets to people. I don't recommend going in the summer.
Try setagaya, it's a new chain from Japan that recently opened.

Agreed, although I am not certain of the actual content, it might've just been very high in sodium. I know that familiar sting and subsequent headache though... my girl felt the same effects
It is popular w/ the ladies in Japan for health reasons.
here
Best bet is to check out a few izakayas. Izakayas serve quinessentially Japanese bar food, the requisite hangout for salarymen post work. They offer lots of small dishes. A few that comes to mind are....
Rockmeisha - west village
Kenka - st marks (avg food, but $1.50 kirin)
Kasadela - 11th & ave c
gyu kaku - midtown
riki - midtown (excellent)
the two yakitori places I mentioned = various chicken parts on skewers.
More pics of setagaya, with menu shots.
itadakimasu!
