i was listening to a local(toronto) jazz station yesterday, and they introduced some dude as a black, transvestite who played the local toronto scene back in 1962 and actually hit #2 on the charts, and i was laughing to myself, because of how odd that sounded, and then i heard the song...damn nice...i raced home and googled/soulseeked shit and found out his name is jackie shane. this song is tough...the voice though, so damn familiar-like, but a great tune nonetheless. just thought i'd sharejackie shane - any other way

Good cover. OG is nice, too, if you haven't heard it:

Here's Bobby Marchan, another great drag soul singer with connections to Stax.

We recently saw on these pages Sylvester. Little Richard comes to mind. Let's list the great drag soul singers.

YOU'D HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GOING BACK TO THE 1960's AS A BLACK TRANSVESTITE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AND WINNING.

YOU'D RATHER GET HEAD FROM A WILD BOBCAT

And much later on, I think, to Cash Money Records.

    Trivia

The song "Sea Cruise" made popular by Frankie Ford actually started life as a Huey "Piano" Smith song with Bobby Marchan on vocals. But producer Johnny Vincent got the idea of dubbing Frankie Ford's vocals on top of Huey "Piano" Smith's backing track. The record became an instant hit and a well known New Orleans R&B hit

In addition to Jackie Shane and William Bell, Chuck Jackson covered this song too. Interesting note: even though Shane and Bell sing "tell her that I'm happy/tell her that I'm gay/and I wouldn't have it any other way," Jackson changes the "gay" line to "tell her that I'm FREE." And he wasn't even slick enough to change the rhyming word.
