Washington Post's Daily Candy mailer that's seen by tons of readers around town.

    The Real Deal on

    mingering mike!

The blind date who turned out to be engaged. The "authentic" Balenciaga bag made of pleather. Perfectly perky tatas that feel hard as rocks. No one likes a phony.

Except, that is, for local criminal investigator and DJ Dori Hadar. He stumbled upon a collection of fake records that turned out to be the genius work of D.C. artist Mingering Mike.

As Hadar explains in his new book, Mingering Mike: the Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar, he was digging for albums at a flea market and unearthed Mingering Mike's oeuvre.

Full-page color pictures show the set, comprising hundreds of elaborate cardboard albums and 45s that Mike made himself, complete with detailed liner notes and paper records. Some had faux price tags and others had been shrink-wrapped just as if they'd been for sale.

It all seems so real. Then again, as one of the records puts it, You Know Only What They Tell You.

Available online at amazon.com or your local bookstore.
