Wow been a while since I've posted up but which artists played at the BlackHawk in SF??? The Black Hawk was a legendary San Francisco nightclub hosting a spectacular range of jazz talents during its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s. Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Cal Tjader, Shelly Manne and many more jazz luminaries played and recorded live albums there. The Black Hawk was located on the corner of Turk Street and Hyde Street in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. In May of 2004, a new building was constructed on the Black Hawk's old location, and is now the 222 Club.Who else played at this club???

I don't know if they still do it, but back then, Down Beat (the jazz magazine) used to run listings of who was playing in the big jazz clubs nationwide. Since you can get the complete Down Beat in most libraries, you could probably look up who played at the Blackhawk on what night...

When did they go out of business, anyway?

Didn't Wynton Kelly & Joe Henderson do a live recording there? Maybe that was the Half-Note?

At any rate the Miles LP @ The Blackhawk with Kelly, Hank Mobley etc is a bona-fide classic. One of my first jazz loves....

    The club closed in 1963.
