recording mp3's for Microwave use...

usually I just hook up my dj mixer to my audio interface, make sure the vinyl i want to record is just about almost going in the red in the led meter, then record it. But I was djing with my boy last night and he was telling me that it's being recorded to low and that I have to take another step to push up the levels. He also told me that he's going to re-encode a lot of his mp3's since they were recorded too low. He uses audio cleaning lab but I have soundforge. Do i just have to normalize the file? Or is there something else I'm missing?
