Nah but seriously, I really dig Saul Williams' stuff. Get ready for the hate though cause SS seams to fucking hate him with a passion. He needs an E-40 cameo or something to get anyone to take an interest.
Haven't checked for him since the late 90s, but i used to be into some of his just spoken word stuff. I remember something with a beat and violin though from back then too.
A couple of years ago, I went to see Saul speak after a showing of SLAM at the bumbershoot festival. I decided to show up as the movie was ending because I had seen it already. When I got there security told me the room was full so no entrance. Right then Saul shows up and security tells him the same thing. He politely explains that he is the featured speaker and they let him in. As he's walking away I yell "Saul", give him the help sign. Security looks at him and says, "is he with you?", not even blinking Saul says, "of course". An usher escorted us to some seats as the last 10 minutes of the movie played. He got up and talked about a lot things. The only bit I remember is him saying that his favorite hip-hop artist was Bjork. To me dude is just a freaky hippy who likes his art bent. Can't say I like his music but as a poet he's next level. If you need evidence of this, plaese to refer yourself to the final scene of the documentary "Ill Make Me a World" where he does "Ohm".
yeah his spoken word is dope, but come on, his live performances are ridiculous too. i havn't heard any of his cd's recently but when i checked his live show a couple months ago my jaw was dropped pretty much the whole time.
i mean sure for your conventional hip hop he doesn't fit the mold and i think thats why people hate on him, but to me his specialty is how he brakes out of set boundaries and dwelves into some really creative and new type shit. IMO, anyone who pushes the boundries like that is whats up.

IMO, he's definitely done a lot for hip hop, but at the same time like my initial post mentioned, he's definitely not apart of the conventional hip hop mold that people want him or expect him to be in.

I dont think people "want" him to be HipHop/Rapp/whatever. He's a spoken word artist that dabbles here and there w/ Hip Hop. And I dont critque his work through a rap lens. Did he come on the scene claiming to be a rapper who then morphed into a poet? I dont recall that. Just cause he has collabo-d doesnt necessarily qualify him as Hip Hop IMO.
I second this, His Cds are in the rap section cause there usually isnt a spoken word section. other than that there is very little cross over into rap.

i hear you. though, the intial post of this thread was most underestimated MC. but, does that have to imply that he's strictly Hip Hop?

Most Underatted MC vs underatted when attempting to MC.

Bad Brains merely sounds like nails on a chalkboard to you?
worked with Saul on this mix, featuring his vocals from Saul Williams over different beats, along with some freestyles and snippets of other artists to flesh everything out. The idea came about after watching dude's amazing, frantic live shows - it seemed like a cool project to try and translate that energy and his lyrics to audiences who weren't already checking for Saul's avant-garde originals. After I already finished the mix, Saul decided to title it Real Niggery, and it got pressed up as a promo. People couldn't get past that name, and I caught a ton of flack as result, but I'm still really proud of how it came out. Download it here

Look out for next weeks "7L AND ESOTERIC APPRECIATION!"...
I can't get into details yet but we have a project coming together later this year.
I have heard some of his new tracks. Reznor is co-producing his album that is coming out later this year.
oh for fucks sake.

Peripheral.
what can i say, space is the place.
Do you place him within Hip Hop. I hate to sound all Catagory-ish,but?

personally, I think Aceyalone is one of the most underrated MC's, but hey i'll leave that for another discussion for mufagas on here to clown on.
Like those segues on VH1 Soul. The chick doing rap hands talking about "Life, blood, feeling!"
Brer Soul.
This project is like a perfect triangulation upon your errors of taste. If it featured Travis Barker the cipher would truly be complete.
