ok, this DJ dude who is an acquaintance of mine and shingalings calls the store the other day. Keep in mind I like dude, he is super nice/cool...plays early soul/ wild RnB/ Norton records kinda shit, but dude is a lame DJ, dude rocks comps..and I just dont mean plays a couple songs offa comps, I mean, leaves them on the table and bounces back and forth between them for like a dozen or so tunes. Dude gets PAID for this. Anyway he calls the shop "Im being flown to the UK to DJ (???WTF?!?) and I dont want to play what I played there A FEW MONTHS AGO(?!?WTF #2?!?), so I was wondering if you could hip me to some really cool and rare stuff because I wanna impress these people" (?!?WTF???!?#3) How do these dudes get set up like this? Flown to the Uk to DJ, twice in a year? Plays comps? Wants to "impress" so he is asking what is some hot shit to play? Dang. Yeah Im mad doggie, yeah Im asshurt, I wanna go play in the UK...I have little records with the big holes in them, real ones...I gotta passport...sheeeeet

That sucks. I hate feeling aggro about dudes getting shine who have zero talent.

Hook Up, did you get my PM?

I bet if he plays anywhere remotely good in the UK he'll get called out on just playing stuff off comps, especially at a place playing early soul or any northern stuff.

Yeah fuck, i thought the Uk scene was really anal about original pressings and shit. A northern soul collector I knew from Sydney said that she wouldn't even take original LPs to play over there - strictly OG 45s!

I think that's a bit too anal, but being flown to the UK to play comps is next level wackery.

The better question is: what is this guy doing to get these bookings?

Rather than hate, study that science and boost it.

    Maybe he's a liar.

One of my first roommates had been the tour manager
of the Sex Pistols, drank beer with Lou Reed in an
NYC jail, had a scene in "Taxi Driver" that got cut out, etc, etc....

  • had a scene in "Taxi Driver" that got cut out

Ha! This sounds like an awesome lie. Man, I love liars and half-nuts people that believe their own BS. Highly entertaining.

    Saying though.

Every talentless DJ I've ever seen blow up was hustling hard. Contemplate the amount of time anyone on here spends hunting records - and imagine the results if all those hours were spent hustling promoters instead.

    SSP.
Shameless Self Promotion. Dudes who have mad skills are "usually" fairly nice chilled chaps whereas dudes with no talent have to make lots of noise to compensate.

Compare this situation to one where you put a lot of work into planning and executing a dope set only to have people asking you if you got any trance or can you play some rock and roll etc.

    Sayin' though!

    SoulOnIce:

You should start a thread about awesome & farfetched lies! I would but I can't seem to think of any at the moment. Plus I gotta work in 4 hours and I haven't slept yet. Salma Hayek and Scarlett Johanssen won't stop tickle fighting in my bed. How am I supposed to sleep through that?!?!

Has Djing ever been dominated by skills?

It??s important to mingle with people and dude seems to know the deal.

  • dude rocks comps..and I just dont mean plays a couple songs offa comps, I mean, leaves them on the table and bounces back and forth between them for like a dozen or so tunes. Dude gets PAID for this.

are you sure they aren't microwave records? because that is cool......right guys? especially when travelling. which one leaves you with more street cred, comps or microwave? i'm not saying one is better than the other but is the medium more important than moving the crowd?

anyway if he is a cool dude and you sell records why not sell him a few good records? hip him to some things that he might not know, you don't have to put his set together. you win by selling records, he wins by playing them. if he comes back saying he killed it you both know the reason why. not to mention get to know him better. if he is flying out there 2 days out of the year there are 363 other days they could be flying you out. sometimes in order to succeed the master must become the student.

  • The unfortunate hard truth is that he is the DJ flying to the UK and you are the record dealer. If the situations were reversed that would be chill but right now your job is to lace him with some records... and if you want it to be different then you should spend the next few months to a year working your connections (you know you have them) to try and get some gigs over there.

There are lots of dudes that come to my shop with fantastic jobs, gigs, assignments, etc and it is my job to lace them with nice records... no matter how much of a tool they may be, no matter how much I wish I had their gig. If I do my job well they will come back... but if I really wanted that gig I wouldn't be spending my time running a record shop I would be trying to do what that other dude is doing.

It does suck to have to serve a clown though.

I could go off right now on my current situation relating to this, I have been dealing with this on a slightly different angle for quite some time.

    ...just one word GYPSYMANIA.

I see how figuring out how they do it could be beneficial, but some of these tactics are too low for me.

Its one of those things that is just painful to watch from any perspective...selling them records or booking them in a club.

    I can relate.

Find out his flight plans, I'll swipe his record box from the luggage area and mail all that shit back to you.

Invite him/her to post on the board!

They'll fit right on in with this new breed of poster that doesn't know anything about records!

shit, yeah I did and I forgot....I will hit you back here in a little bit...sorry..

  • Yeah, I know it is in the shops best interest to sell him some records...but you know, Shingaling and I would LOVE to go to the UK to play, you know?...our Soul nights are pretty big (400+ on the best nights) (Shamelss plug, our next one is March 17th with special guest Tony Janda! so if you are in the Memphis area, come on out!) and I know we could rock shit over there...I told shingaling, who fielded the call, to tell him..."no records till he gives up his contact in the UK!"(I was HALF joking) Yeah, let dude have his day(s) I guess...its just that I got lucky and got to spin in the UK once about 4 years ago and it was a blast! It was a cool feeling to have Ian Wright come up to the decks to peep some labels and ask what they were! Unfortunately, the night I spun at no longer exsists over there and I have no contacts anymore...I wanna go back! Wanting to go back and then hearing this dude is going over to play just hit a nerve...like I said, just ventin' y'all...

  • couple ideas

quit the record store, as its demise is inevitable, get serrato...become a producer...make heat...then someone might fly your crybaby ass to the u.k.
so yer ego might be stroked

    just a suggesstion....

    h

thats the thing...he doesnt pay $$$ for records...plus, the style he plays, shit on Mr. Manicotti comps (early soul, screamin' RnB( i think they call it "new breed RnB" in the UK now) is kinda the shop's forte/secret squirrel and it isnt HUGELY in demand at the moment...were still talkin' $100 tops(which is WAY outta dudes range, see? a "lame" DJ) for some 45s, the hot shit in this genre is (still) cheap(ish).

  • ok, new development....turns out dude doesnt want to BUY any records, he wants to "borrow" them to take to England...so he wants advice AND the records for free....full asshurt venting now encompases the world of DJing and record dealing...of course he got the "oh Hell NO". go about your business, asshurt venting done(on this subject anyway)

You could be his "rental sommelier" and demand a ticket to the UK and boarding to escort said records to and from the events super DJ will be doing.
