  • I've heard some strong David Axelrod drum breakdown parts I wish were open, they either have singing or another instrument on top 'em, or an unwanted sound is reverberating into the drum break part. Stuff like that I've heard on the Strange Ladies and Auction albums.

Also, the Barkays had one long drum break on an album that I can't remember the name of, but the break has the sound of wind playing over the whole thing.

    Hey,

I the Smith joint and add:

    -"If I Was a Bird"-Howlin' Wolf.

He just had to sing and play guitar over it.

Here are some more I'll name:

    -"Magnificent Sanctuary Band"-David Clayton Thomas.
-"Sing a Simple Song"-The Meters (though you can get parts of this one chopping between the horn riffs).
    -"Warning"-David Axelrod.
    -"The Weight"-Rotary Connection.

    Peace,

That's the exact song that popped in my mind when I read the thread title.

  • I wish there was a part in 100 Proof Aged In Soul's "I've Come To Save You". I just love how the drums sound...

I don't know man - sounds more like The Turtles drums than Skull Snaps. Maybe it's the MP3 but these don't sound "hard" to me even though I like the basic pattern.

This is a Bolly one. 808ish bigtime, the music is decent, but never trails off. Enjoy:

    Every single Whatnauts track.

Love that sound, especially when it's slightly distorted.

You could be thinking of New Birth's "Patiently"

well its more like the turtles pattern, but they snap pretty hard. the snares and hi-hats at least...not much definition on the kick if thats what you mean...

Love the hi-hats on that track.

  • Pink Floyd's "Echoes" from Live At Pompeii[/b].

The stereo mix of The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" has a nice funky groove at the end, although even if you mix it to the channel where the drums are dominant, you still hear the piano bleeding through.

Ramsey Lewis' "Sun Goddess", specifically where Don Myrick does his solo.

    The Family's "Yes"

    Level 42' "Dream Crazy"

Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song" is also nice, if you move it to one channel before the vocals and bass kicks in, the drums are more upfront. I've used it at the regular speed and slighly slower, which gives it a more grungy sound (think "Celebration Day"). It would be great to just have the drum track for that.

Have you heard that one track from that period called "Gangster of Love"? It's a two-part song, and both parts are on one of those budget Hendrix records (there's a review of it somewhere here on the site)and a 45 (never seen it). Towards the end of the second part there's an absolute mindmelter of a breakdown! Serious business, but the singer is shouting and whooping over it.

Great for listening, pretty bad for sampling, since you always get a bit of resonance from his screaming.

So many good breaks on those recordings though!

There's a babybreak on Roxy Music's "If There is Something" that has a guitar over it; I wish it was open.

    -"A Joyful Process"-Funkadelic.

I was listening to that 45 this morning and thought about this thread.

One for me: Aphrodite's Child - All the Seats
