Oh, come on now! As a gay black couple and insane country singer, you should realize that sampling from compilations and DJ mixes is hott schitt.
What are they there for?
It would be as if you gave me, as a holiday gift, a Whitman's sampler, and as I plucked a chocolate and raised it to my mouth, you admonished me, "I only intended you to notice my chocolate selecting abilities, not to actually eat the chocolate".
I usually judge beats by how long they took to make.
just sounds sloppy to me.
True but it's a mixtape cut, not something from the album.
Ok, well it can be forgiven then. Probably not the type of thing that was mixed/mastered as an album cut would be. I'm definitely feeling Nas nowadays though, I like that other new track someone else posted recently , might have been on the realheadz board, called "where are they now".
crazy, I just played the OG on my show last week... copped a minty copy of that Lijadu Sisters record at the WFMU fair (maybe two years ago) for $15, that was nice.
As for sampling from mix cds and comps, I'm of the opinion that limiting yourself and creating rules for what is proper production etiquette is laaaaame. If you can make it sound nice, then do it. I don't care how cheap you were to get the source material. Of course, I'm still digging for the OG's too... but I won't hatt on that type of behaviour - if it was indeed from the Soul Boulders comp.

Would you be interested in taking responsibility for supplying Nas with that copy of "Imagine" that he rapped over for his stomach-turning remake?
Statik Selektah.
And here is a Spinemag link.
Thanks.
Yeah that definitely came from the Soul Boulders CD purchased here or one of the other shops that stock(ed) it.
Dudes dig for sample CDs now...
All is well and good. Got the rest of the day off, so I'm just kickin' it at the crib.
In flip flops and socks...and sweatpants. Fittin' ta' enhaance yo' braaiin...

Yeah - I actually dug it. But man, Nas is one helluva nostalgia trip with this album. I'm surprised he didn't name it "Memory Lane."
Nas Law.
