...and Waxidermy is pooling their money to
buy it for display in Crink's pantry!

    holy...

  • holy...

some smart record exec probably told his intern "get this record at any cost" and will then hold the mechanical publishing rights to the record and release it and make 3 times what he paid for the acetate.

    or...at least that's what i'd do...

  • buying a record doesn't give you any publishing rights...does it?

No, but owning the cleanest surviving copy of the recording could
possibly allow you to have some kind of financial interest in a
reissue sanctioned by the rights holders of the material included within.

ie you could lease it to Warners. But as the person selling
the acetate points out, he has already made a "high quality
digital copy" of it, so who's to say who owns the "cleanest copy?"

I suppose it could be purchased as an investment, if you believed
it would appreciate signifigantly in value over, say, 10 years.

if those performances only exist in that form, and nearly 40 years have passed since they were registered with ASCAP, BMI, whoever, there is a chance that they werent' renewed in 25 years.

so the longer version of my post should have been, "...whoever would pay that much for the record would have lawyer smart enough to find that loophole to those performance rights and collect."

more shady things have been done in the past by people who have more money than they peoeple who are taking them to court (ie: 99 records vs sugar hill)

I would love to hear what this sounds like - certainly wouldn't turn my nose up on a decent release of this which wouldn't cost me $20,000+

  • it's already available on ebay on CD (from Moe Tucker's copy of the same acetate apparently).

  • Thats to much money for a record that skips.LOL

The ultimate mid-week find. I was talking about this item with Eric from Mississippi records this fall. A couple of interesting facts. Because it was found in sale of things from someone who recently died in bad circumstances, the especulation is that the disc belonged to Bowie and that some drug/sex buddy stole it and kept all these years.

They tried unsuccessfully to sell the disc to record companies when the Moe Tucker copy turned up making it less important.

I think this will sell for between 25-30k. Rey get your weight up. 18k will not cut it.

good christ! $41k and counting! Anyone else think ebay may have been a really dumb place to sell this thing? THe fees alone are gonna be murder, not to mention half of the 100+ bidders smell a little fishy.

With 5 days to go, and already at over 50, who wants to bet this goes over $100K?

you are too right. apparently as record collectors, bidding on records for sale is something that's frowned upon.

"i'm the king of hypothetical manning up"

  • Whoa...the total number of bids has now dropped to 132; a few minutes ago, I think it was at 144. The crazy thing is that max bid is STILL at $100,500.

It'll be interesting to see if the number of bids keeps dropping and if that changes the high bid.

  • i think it's still over $100k because a couple people that had bids canceled just bid again. this auction is a clusterfuck, i really don't know what they were/are thinking.

    Wow, you're pretty cool.
