I on a mission to put all my favorite stuff into my ipod so I started going thru my 45s to see what I didn't have mp3s too and came up with a bunch that I couldn't find with some quick download searches either so I just got curious at how common they are. I never really pay attention to the "rarity" of records so I'm out of touch with all that...I just know what I like. Anyway, I wanted to share these and I thought I might as well satisfy curiousity while at it:1)Lavell Kamma & His Afro Soul ReviewSoft Soulhttp://www.sendspace.com/file/9nymy8I Know Where It's Athttp://www.sendspace.com/file/mq8gtoTupelo Sound, no year2)Al Wilson-Be Concernedhttp://www.sendspace.com/file/2w5frhThis is a perfect R&B song to me. He has a incredible voice and uses it very well. The lyrics have some meaning to them. • "Houston Town" is an all time fave and actually had an 80's issue as well, love that Ted Taylor stuff always.

The Tupelo Sound is slightly obscure but there's clean copies floating around so I think stock quantity may exist out there somewhere. I wouldn't mind finding a copy of that Superlatives, tho' it may be pretty easy to get back east. Alot of the other titles are pretty common methinks .

    Cool tunes~~ thanks for sharing!

  • yeah, now that I think about it I know I've seen some those while out shopping for stuff. The ones I that were more unknown to me are mainly (except for when I got them obviously) are; The Superlatives, Soul Survivors and that Lavell Kamma. I'm familiar with Al Wilson but somehow slept on that song and know I can't stop playing it!

    thanx for the feedback.

The Lavell Kamma I was just mentioning recently
that it was one of the most strangely common 45's
I know of, since everyone seems to have it, everywhere
in the country, but when you first find it and look at
it, you think there must have only been 200 pressed, it
just has that look. Great single, by the way - there's this
article available online, someone's college thesis, that tells
his whole life story and the story behind making the single -
I think they even mention how it was so widely distributed
but don't clear it up...it's available HERE as a PDF.

Superlatives is fairly common on Westbound, but I don't recall seeing
it on the original label. Another great 45. Morocco Mole's favorite.

I'm interested in hearing that Messengers track, I have the earlier
LP on Rare Earth and it has some moments. They were originally "Michael
& the Messengers" and you may find some good 45's by them under that name.
Unfortunately, I can't get the download, when I click it I just get
a sendspace page with no link(?)

Ted Taylor is the man. I have the 80's press of Houston Town that P-Ro
    mentioned. Stereo Jack's fifty-cent box.

Here's a fairly common 45 I picked up last week and really liked.
I posted it on W*******y but not over here...the intro to this track
    kills me everytime:

  • thanx for the info. I'll check that stuff out. here's the link again, I checked and worked for me:

  • Superlatives on Dynamics is the original pressing, raerer than the Westbound I think but still like a $10-$20 record. But it's a GREAT record!

  • Yeah i've been curious about a Ted Taylor 45 i have too...
"Somebody's Gettin' It" on Alarm. It also gets asked about whenever i play it, but i can't seem to find anything about it. Wondering why this dude doesn't get more props... And thanks for the links by the way. I'll add in a bit...

  • Here's the link to the Ted Taylor track i mentioned above. Don't sleep.

  • Yeah, I'm on a mission to find more Ted Taylor myself. Thanx for that link. Yeah, this is more about the fact that in this age of all the reissue and compilations and soul/funk/rock explosion that I'm justt surprised I don't hear more about these records cause they are all pretty great records, even compared to some of the stuff I hear people talking about more frequently. I'm just curious why I've never heard anyone (or hardly anyone) talk about the Superlatives or Ted Taylor, etc...

  • thank you very much for taking the time to up those rare gems.

    thanks!

indeed, one of the best double-siders to come out of detroit!

Can't name any offhand (try Dusty Grooves), but I know for a fact that Ted Taylor (R.I.P.) is well-repped in the CD reissue game. In Chicago at least, his 45's (especially on the Ronn label) turn up all the time. He sold to the same grits-&-greens soul-blues audience that also supported Tyrone Davis, Latimore, Z.Z. Hill, both Johnny Taylors, Little Milton, etc.. If I had to do a Ted Taylor personal Top 10 and rank the cuts in order, 1972's "I'm Just A Crumb In Your Bread Box" would be right smack at #1. No, wait a minute, I'd put "Long Ago" up there. Ah, "Only The Lonely Knows?" Fuck it - the man recorded some classic stuff through the years.

You might want to track down The Super Taylors, a 70's-era album on Ronn (later reished on CD) that comped individual selections from Ted and his labelmate, Little Johnny Taylor, plus a few good duets between the two (supposedly the whole album was an unfinished Ted & LJT duet LP fleshed out with previously released tracks). And this is just the short version of his history - he was also on Ebb, MCA, his own Solpudgits in the '80s (I don't know what that means either), Atco, Duke, and OKeh (where he waxed the version of "Ramblin' Rose" that the MC 5 based their rendition on).

  • Yeah i've been curious about a Ted Taylor 45 i have too...
    "Somebody's Gettin' It" on Alarm.

I've seen it, but not often. I have the album it comes from, which is titled 1976. I think Ted's version came out around the same time as Johnnie Taylor's, which was on Columbia and was his followup to "Disco Lady" if I'm not mistaken. (Naturally, Johnnie's version KILLED Ted's, chart-wise...it was Johnnie who would up having the hit.)

This early Ted Taylor LP on Okeh, collecting his
45's for that label, is an excellent piece of early
60's R&B and hard soul, including the previously mentioned
original of "Rambling Rose." It can usually be found for
    relatively low dollars.

You mean Ronn...1972 was the year on this one. "I'm Just A Crumb In Your Bread Box" was the A-side. I don't think this charted, but it was a big hit in the Southern states.

    6)Messengers-In The Jungle

Does this have "That's The Way A Woman Is" on the reverse side?

    6)The Superlatives 45
    7)Willie Henderson-Let's Merengue/Gangsta Boogie Bump
    8)Soul Survivors-Impossible Mission (Mission Impossible)
    9)Skylark-The Writing's On The Wall
    10)Dyke & The Blazers-Shotgun Slim

Out of this group of ten, I probably see 10,9,5,4,3, and 2 the most in the field. The Dyke, Skylark, Billy Stewart and Al Wilson tracks were the flip sides to hits so naturally those are gonna turn up on the regular.

  • thanks for the info... been wondering about that 45 for awhile. I have his "Keeping My Head Above Water" album from the late 70s (or maybe even early 80s) which is str8

    is 1976 worth tracking down...?

Well, thanks to YOU for the info, because that is the most common Ted Taylor album out there, and the fact that it was on a major label in the late '70s kinda scared me away. Guess I've been right to avoid it.

    is 1976 worth tracking down...?

It's not bad. It doesn't take me to the mountaintop like his Ronn, Atco and OKeh recordings, but it's not an embarrassment either. Get it if you find it at a reasonable price.

  • thanx for all the info much appreciated. Yeah, that's funny....for all these years I just looked at that label and "saw" Ronnin and never caught it. It's funny how you can just glance at something once and it stick and you can go years never correcting it because your brain is "convinced"....ha.

That Messengers does have that cut on the flip side.

What's the name of the Al Wilson album that the 45 comes from with "Be concerned". I found some more of his stuff that is good but I really like his voice so i'm trying to find more.
