HiOn Monday 4th December 2006 we'll be releasing the first ever compilation of British privately-pressed funk and soul, entitled "Working Man's Soul". Thanks to Soul Strut, DJ Shadow and many US diggers, the likes of the Kashmere Stage Band records are well documented and rightly known. We think it's time that the artists in the UK who were producing equally funky stuff at that time got their due. To celebrate the launch of this first of its kind compilation, we're hosting a launch party at a genuine Working Man's Club in London on Monday 11th Dec 2006! The launch party will feature the Bob Bernard Trio live on stage, Licorice Soul DJs, comedy and many other forgotten Working Men's Club traditions - watch this space for more details as the big day draws closer! We have only a very limited number of tickets available for this once-only event.Working Man's Soul Launch PartyMonday 11th December 20068pm-12am Bethnal Green Working Men's Club44-46 Pollard Row,Bethnal Green,London E2 6NBFor anyone who's interested, here's the background on the album...For the past 10 years or so the three of us at Licorice Soul have been digging up some fantastic privately pressed UK-only records made by British cabaret artists. Unlike the USA school band and local funk and soul band records that are generally pretty well documented these days, the UK equivalents are totally unknown, not talked about, and not shown in any price guides. They've been largely overlooked by collectors even within the UK.That's about to change. Working Man's Soul celebrates the forgotten world of British cabaret performers from the 1960s and 1970s and selects the cream of the cuts only previously available on privately pressed records. Manufactured by the artists themselves in miniscule quantities, these records were sold at live performances at Social Clubs, Miners' Welfare Clubs and Working Man's Clubs across the UK. Some of the artists went on to become household names; some went back to the day job; others made a successful and lucrative, albeit understated, career of playing three sets a night, six nights a week.Working Man's Soul covers everything from soul, funk and jazz to rock and easy listening; the common theme is of music recorded and performed to celebrate the good times and the end of the working week. The records from which these tracks are taken have been unearthed by Licorice Soul over many years of persistent (and usually fruitless) searching at flea markets, car boot sales, charity shops, and even the odd proper second hand record shop. With a track listing including superb covers of classics like Funky Nassau, Watermelon Man, Work Song, Time Is Tight and Memphis Underground, this is one killer compilation that should be on any funk collector's wish list. Check out MP3 samples on the website. The album will be released on CD on Monday 4th December 2006. There will also be an LP release. You can get tickets for the launch party here:http://www.licoricesoul.com/lsd014.phpStay funky,Ed, Sie & ChrisLicorice Soul
