As we all know, certain songs tend to be good no matter who is recording them ... the whole buying-a-cheesy-lookingrecord-cause-there's-a-james-brown-cover phenomenon has beenlauded and/or clowned ad nauseum, but there are other songs thatI simply must buy versions of.I WANT IT NOW:[/b]Walk Away Renee(I Wanna) TestifyAlmost any Curtis Mayfield songobscure Beatles covers (Rain, She Said She Said, etc)It's All Over Now Baby BlueMAYBE IT'S WORTH $5 AFTER ALL:[/b]Both Sides NowPeople Make the World Go RoundHey JoeWitchita LinemanSly Stone covers...so what are the cover versions that, when you seethem on the back cover of an album, make your wallet fly out the pocket of it's own volition??

I would definitely add the Marvin Gaye songs to my list.

13th floor elevators has to be my favourite cover of this song.

The chocolate watchband one isn't bad either.

Well: It's all about THEM. Beck knows. Ask him.

    (I Wanna) Testify

Don't forget Derek Martin's "Soul Power" on Volt. It's a takeoff of this song.

MAYBE IT'S WORTH $5 AFTER ALL:
    Both Sides Now

Dave Van Ronk's "Clouds (Both Sides Now)" on Verve/Forecast is the best cover of this song I've ever heard.

    Witchita Lineman

The Mark IV's "You're My Everything" has nearly the same chord progression, but is formatted into a '73-ish smoothy nite ender. Just ask DCast.

Was it bassie that said she always checks for covers of Sunny? I got a 60s record of this Korean chick thats pretty swanky. She does a of Sunny with some of the lyrics in Korean. If I ever get non lazy I'll post it up.

The Garrett Lund version of this song is up there with the Elevators version in my opinion. Its much more polished sounding, which isn't for everyone. I don't really like the Chocolate Watchband one as much, but its okay. I don't really like their version of I'm Not Like Everybody Else either. I need more versions of both of these songs. Ain't no Sunshine is probably my favorite song for cover versions mentioned thus far. Lyn Collins and the Temptations are probably my favorites.

Another that I forgot are Neil Young covers,
especially by soul artists. 2 essentials:

"Heart of Gold" by Betty Lavette (Atlantic 45)

    and

"Down By the River" by the Undisputed Truth (from the awesome "Cosmic Truth" LP)

Anyone know any other soulful Neil Young covers I can look for?

not Young, but Stills (sorry to go off-road): Latimore's cover of For What It's Worth (slowed down to about -2 or so) gives me chills - the back-up vocals make the the song.

Buddy Miles did "Down By The River," and quite a few people who grew up in the early seventies knew his version better than Neil's.

    Stella By Starlight

    Here's that Rainy Day

    Angel Eyes

    Caravan

    Lush Life

I don't think I've ever heard the THEM cover, I totally forgot about that Almost Grown record. I still like the 13th floor elevators version better, I like that it sounds like a shitty demo.

Neil Young: I like Mary Love's version of Southern Man.

Here's a version of Baby Blue not mentioned yet,
although (like the Chocolate Watchband version) cribbed
from the Them arrangement - but by members of Them, as
    the Belfast Gypsies:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/17oz0k

I'd say if you like the Chocolate Watchband version without
having heard the Them version, you'll love the Them version, since
the CW is just a lesser (but still good) cover of theirs.
I never liked how the CW version cuts out the entire first verse -
and Van Morrison is 1,000x the singer that Dave Aguilar is...
