My wife downloads podcasts from the CBC (we're Canadian), as for myself I mostly download mixes. A few that I've enjoyed (and can remember) are Andy Smith's Northern Soul mixes courtesy of his site, Mr. Phipson's Baile Funk (http://www.mrphipson.de/), and two podcats/ imixes that I can't remember where I found them: DJ Spin Doctor's Winter 06 Mix and a mix called Mama's Basement (2003) - both of these mixes are worth finding.

The current palate (in a constant state of change):
If you're not looking for music, I can't recomend the Ricky Gervais podcast enough. (they're the highest downloaded podcast for a reason.) Also I like the Adam and Joe show podcasts, which you can get from itunes or xfm. But thier humour may be a bit 'britcentric', but they're still very funny.

I listened to the first series which was just hillarious. Havnt checked it out lately, but arent they charging now?

Yep they're charging now. But not much.
There's plenty of free stuff out there though. Apart from the 12 free shows they did for the Guardian Online, theres also 3 odd years of the show available from when they were on XFM (a London radio station). You should be able to find these on the better torrent sites.
