Last March, McGruder announced he needed a break to concentrate on "The Boondocks" for the Cartoon Network. Many papers around the country elected to publish reruns of the strip, which are slated to end on Nov. 25. Other papers, including the Chicago Tribune, used replacements for "The Boondocks," which debuted April 19, 1999.According to Universal Press Syndicate president Lee Salem, attempts to get McGruder to commit to a definitive return date fell through, which put publications still running the strip in a bind."This situation is a far cry from the end of our relationship," Salem said. "Our hope is that we can work with him in the future, either in newspapers or in different media."In the absence of McGruder's strip, the Tribune has been running "Watch Your Head.""We haven't decided on a permanent replacement for `The Boondocks' yet," said Geoff Brown, the Tribune's associate managing editor for features. "Several strips are under consideration."
