I go with Evans as I stated in that Rotary Connection thread.Dude had dynamics and sound balance on lock....I like Stepney, but Evans' productions seem to have more cajones to me.

    Oh shit, my head hurts even thinking about this decision. Think I'm going to have to go Stepney though.

    Evans by a long shot. Stepney was talented to be sure, but Evans was a visionary.

    I agree.

    Stephney is more 'arty' but his arrangements can be frilly like a renaissance fair blouse.

    Evans puts some kick in there, even in the more spacey stuff - Ashby's Rubiyat for ex.

    Whoa. That's a tough call. They were/are both fantastic arrangers, but I'd have to give it to Stepney on the basis of the classic shit he did with EWF, Ramsey and The Emotions after his Chess/Cadet days. Stepney is definitely one of the GOAT for me. That said, "Groovin with the Soulful Strings" is my shit right now (what's up, JP?).

    I have a Junior Wells 45 on (I think) Blue City, which he produced and arranged. One side is called "You're Tough Enough" and the other is "The Hippies Are Trying". It's pretty good.

    Evans for me is a sure shot. If he did a record i am on it like a hawk. Stephney is Legendary for me. Those Cadet House Drums sound like honey in my ears.

    I think Marlena's California Soul is my favorite track of all time.

    That's right - I think he's a lecturer at Berklee College of Music or something. My old band were considering writing to him to ask if he'd be willing to do some string charts for our second album, but then we remembered how much of his shit we'd sampled on the first one...

    Stepney died in 1976.
    Evans lives on the East Coast.
