Eh, boston does have a reputation. maybe it was all those public enemy albums. I don't think it is all deserved, but I've seen and heard some things since i moved here that dropped my jaw.
To be fair, probably not worse than most american cities. Definitely better than Cincinnati, the city i grew up near.

I almost pm'ed you about this last week. did you see the bostonsportsmedia.com article on this very topic? Basically, in Boston right now, there is a baseball player having a NO DOUBT HALL OF FAME career. But, it just seems like too many mornings all I hear about is how he is lazy, spacey, or he is overpaid. Meanwhile, Trot, the great-white-dirt-dog spaces out, gets thrown out on the bases all the time (worst baserunner I've ever seen), and produces half as much at the plate, but he's a 'gamer,' who likes to 'get dirty'. This is shit I've been bitching about to my friends for years, and the article hit the nail on the head.
Anyway, I think the sports media in this town would rather tear down a player than praise a hall of fame career, and I think they do this by reinforcing some of the stereotypes that have dogged latin baseball players since Roberto Clemente: lazy, standoffish, blah, blah, blah.
Sorry. Maybe I spend too much time each day reading, listening, and talking about this shit...but, it drives me nuts, and seems rooted in judgements based on someone's race.

Boston sports media is ruthless and can be terribly unfair - but
they'll do it to anybody, and you can't convince me it has to with
"race" - maybe they call Manny lazy and standoffish because at times that
is exactly what he has been? I'm not going to list off every dumb or selfish
thing Manny has done, but it's not like he hasn't earned some of the crap
he gets. And anyway, your average Sox fan doesn't care - as long as he keeps
bashing the ball, they love him, and they should.

True. But, at the same time, Trot is there after every game to talk to the media, and thank god and country. I think that sells better to Joe Red Sox Nation than Manny, with his dreadlocks and baggy pants.
I also think Ortiz doesn't take any shit because he's more affable and will talk to the media.
And, I think that maybe I was lumping a lot of fans in with media coverage, which is unfair. But, someone is buying those newspapers and listening to those radio shows that are filled with hatchet jobs on the guy who may be the best hitter in 20 years. And, you can't convince me there isn't an aspect of racism to it. Like I said, call me a conspiracy theorist, or an SS PC Racism Sniffer of the worst kind, but that's how I see it.
I will also agree with this above post, that ABSOLUTELY, Manny has done some incredibly flakey things over the years. And, they deserve some sort of coverage. But, I've just always been confused as to how some minor incident like skipping an all-star game or not running out a grounder can overshadow a career that might end with 600+ HRs and 2,000+ RBIs. Baseball has a long and storied history of eccentric players, and many would argue it is a prerequisite to playing the game. I just don't understand why this one player is such a consistent target of local vitriole. (The John Tomase piece mentioned in the article below was truly one of the meanest columns I've ever read.)
