Hi, your favorite lurker speaking...I'm going to Chicago this sunday, for a whole week I think. I already searched the archive, found some great hotdog, coffeeshop and BBQ recommendations, but no hints on good recordshops (jazz/funk/soul). Dusty Groove is Chicago, right? Are they worth a visit? Thanks for any info. Later - Lu

Dusty Groove is just south of the corner of ashland and division (division stop on the blue line)

I also like gramaphone, on I think clark just north of diversey off the diversey brown/purple line stop. Not really jazz/funk, its more of a DJ shop.

Big Poppa Meaty Ogre sells 45s privately. I'm sure he'll PM you. Also, stay clear of Dave Castillo (unless you want Viagara SPAM 4 life).

Lu, if you're after 45s (or Lps for that matter), you can PM me to join the private Chicago dude network of vinyl slangage. Thes and JoshD did a nice job razing my LP collection this week, but theres plenty left.

  • Thanks for the infos. Meatyogre, I just sent you a PM. Man I'm *really* looking forward to some good hotdogs!

    Later, Lu

You can also hit Hi Fi if you're stopping by Gramaphone, it's right down the street. There was also a 2nd Hand Tunes right across the street, but they closed down.

2nd Hand and Daves are 2 separate stores (they were right next to each other)

Broadway Records is the illest shop in Chicago, but 99% of the population cannot enter the dimension it's in.

Go to Nuevo Leon on 18th just east of Ashland. Get cheese enchiladas w/ the chocolate mole sauce. This is the best thing that exists in this world right now.

Also, I might sell you some records from my Berwyn abode. But I don't have much--just lots of drum breaks and Viagra and Niagara.

...specially since it's been closed these past couple of years. Reckless Records bought out the stock and has been selling it piecemeal in both of their stores.

this is what they want you to believe.

We all know, however, that the best record shop in Chicago uses Crown Books pricetags.

I'm a big fan of the Old School Records in Forest Park (end of the Blue Line and about a 6 block walk). The owners are super friendly, very fair prices, well stocked cheapo bin, dirt cheap 45s.

I've only stopped by once, but a place called Kstarke Records just opened up at 1109 N. Western. Place is still a little haphazard, but it looks like dude is bringing in fresh stock daily.

Mr. Peabody's isn't a bad spot either, at the south Chicago city limits, on the west side of Western Avenue just north of 119th Street.

Does said store smell like catpiss?
