By far one of the most respected and established fresh funk groups on the international circuit, the Poets of Rhythm have released reams of vinyl 45s and LPs under various monikers on such renowned labels as Ninjatune, DJ Shadow's stable Quannum (backing Lyrics Born on the heavily played 'I Changed My Mind') and, with their debut album just re-released to the joy of funk collectors and listeners everywhere, New York's Daptone Records.featuringMALCOLM CATTO[/b](Mo'wax/Stones Throw/Funk 45)Malcolm Catto has become recognised as one of (if not the) top raw funk session drummers in the world today. He has collaborated most famously with DJ Shadow and released the Keystones soundtrack E.P. on Now Again to critical acclaim, while sporting a record collection which rivals both Shadow's and the legendary Keb Darge's own veritable libraries of desperately rare vinyl. The Poets have always had the chops, but with Catto their live set is bound to take on new levels. He also brings with him the Cuban percussionist Ramon "Jacky" Yglesias to add - as if it's not enough already - to the driving rhythms beneath the Poets' music.andBAJKA[/b](Ubiquity/Jazzman)The vocalist known as Bajka (perpetually haunted, it seems, by the sentence, 'how do you pronounce that?' and the reply, 'biker'), whose weathered, valvy tones have graced two recent latin-laced Jazzman 45s ('I Can No Poet Be' and 'The Only Religion I That Believe'), has been described amongst other things as both 'ethereal' and 'otherworldy'. It's easy to see why. Not only does she cut a striking figure on stage, but her voice - which is reminiscent of Spanky Wilson, Billie Holiday and Eartha Kitt rolled into one (whatever the hell that really means), hums with a perfection of coolness seemingly attained without any effort whatsoever.
