whats up with the truth label?I got the sons of truth and i just got wow, I'm really fellin this Lp, Bluesy funky gospelish joint...any info on the label? what to look out for? por Favor?

    shirley is probly the most common title on the label. like my mans said, check for rance allen, i dont know alot of the other good titles

    Remember: Truth is secular. Gospel Truth is naturally where you'll find all the religious acts hangin' out (Rance Allen, etc.).

    Started life as Gospel Truth, becane Truth about '74. There is a new age gospel thing called Blue Aquarius I don't care for too much. Other than that most everything has a gospel vibe and/or a Stax vibe, so I like it all.

    Did You Hear Yourself would fit perfectly into a Blaxpolitation flick. It has all the elements: strong wah wah guitar, spacey work on the keys, and vocal chorus with a lot of echo.

    SHIRLEY BROWN
    Between You And Me/It???s Worth A Whippin (Truth75)
    Between You And Me is a nice and slow Soul number from Shirley Brown???s Woman To Woman LP where she gets to show off her sultry singing. She reminds me a bit of a mix of Aretha and Patti Labelle. It???s Worth A Whippin is a love tune.

    ROUND ROBIN MONPOLY
    Life Is Funky/I???d Rather Loan You Out (Truth 74)
    Let me tell you, I think this 45 is the shit. I first heard this group on a comp. and have been looking for their LP Alpha since then. I haven???t found it yet but I did find this 45. Released on Truth which is a subsidiary of Stax Records, Life Is Funky begins with a catchy guitar riff before the music and vocals come in. It???s worth the price of the 45. The B-side is a ballad with some stupid ass lyrics about a guy who would rather loan his girl out to guys rather than having her leave him. What the fuck is that about? Back to the A-side!

    I have that Blue Aquarius record - it's not a solid LP, but has some good tracks like "Foxfire" etc. Definetly worth getting if it's cheap.

    In fact, i would have to say that Randy brown is one of the most underrated soul singers ever, ok i know that the rare soul crowd tend to like him but still, quite big outing and it's at least 2 good tracks for every lp (most have plnety more..) also his version of Hipnotics "are you lonely" is awesome

    Naw, I agree with his sentiment...

    I've run across several Rance Allen records, NONE of the ones pictured in this thread, and didn't like any of them... good to know I just haven't run into the choice titles yet.

    the maceo woods stuff is going to be too traditional in my opinion for most. great music though. not even my sound but well done stuff.

    gene barge and gene page did a lot of great work on the GT label. those are good names to check for.

    i really dig rance allen.

    some of his albums are not solid all the way through but always one or two good tracks. I like the one with the sweet soul tune "Ain't No Need for Crying".... that song is sweeter than sweet.

    the best rance allen, although different in sound and on Capitol not truth, is "Say My Friend." Really beautiful album, Mizell bros produced, and "Reasons to Survive" is a banger.
