He played Sweet's Ballroom in his hometown of Oakland. Dude was amazing--incredible band, four hot backup singers, and Teedra Moses (blazing!) opened the show. After the band played Shaft (!/?), Ray Ray came out in a vintage two-button mustard suit with Buddy Holly glasses and a skinny tie, a la:But he opened with Marvin's "Ain't That Peculiar."He played his hits, Tony Toni Tone's hits, and some hits he wrote for others (Angie Stone "Brotha", D'Angelo "Untitled" & "Lady" and Total "Kissing You"). But at the end of the show, he was talking about growing up in East Oakland and all the different music he'd listen to, and what he listens to now. And then I heard him say, "'Laffy Taffy' sounds good to me, too."[/b]

He is my King, He is my one
Yes he's my father, Yes he's my son
I can talk to him, cuz he understands
Everything I go through and everything I am
He's my support system, I can't live without him
The best thing since sliced bread,
Is his kiss, his hugs, his lips, his touch
When I'm with my friends
I'm trying to figure out a way
To leave 'em behind just to get back to you
Oh, you're my best kept secret
And that's the way I like it
You're my pride and joy boy
That's why I'm dreaming of you
I wanna kiss you
You're my pride and joy
You're my baby boy
People ask me how I feel about you
They ask me if I love you (yeah)
Am I crazy for you (yeah yeah yeah)
**Sound of Ross getting ready to try and talk some trash about Kells**
If I was your girlfriend
Would u let me dress u
I mean, help u pick out your clothes
Before we go out
Not that you???re helpless
But sometimes, sometimes
Those are the things that bein??? in love???s about
If I was your one and only friend
Would u run 2 me if somebody hurt u
Even if that somebody was me?
Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be
Please
And?
What is supposed to be suspect about that lyric?
Raphael Saadiq > Prince
Hmm, I don't know. That a man sang it?
And theterdsteam: this was in Oakland.
but your state of mind is soooooooooooooooo san fran
Yeah, theterdstream, it was over there at a venue called "Sweets"--get it right.
Let me also address your fallacious attempt to equate Prince's masterpiece with Ray-Ray's two "compositions":
Prince's is about moving beyond gender roles and reaching greater intimacy with his girlfriend.
Ray-Ray's are both about kissing dudes... a pleasure which he likens to the thrill of keeping a secret as well as to the texture of sliced rye.
I am not at all mad at that--I'm just saying.
Oh, I think I know where:
All I'm sayin' is that it was a Local Black Experience.
It's true, whenever I'm in Oakland all I hear is Raphael Saadiq. It's like, dudes think it's all about Keak. But Keak gets his ghetto pass from Ray Ray, belee dat.
Did you tell him that his first solo LP was great? More important, did you ask him WTF happened with the second solo record? Cause it was WACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saadiq's catalogue < Prince's catalogue
Saadiq's overall suspect factor < Prince's overall suspect factor

Side, side question:
What is a better track to play for ur gurl?
Tony! Toni! Ton??! - It Never Rains (in Southern California)
or
New Edition - Can You Stand The Rain
Oran "Juice" Jones - The Rain
Hey hey baby how ya doin' come on in here
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat
Yeah how was your day today?
Did you miss me?
You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
That's right now close your mouth
'Cause you cold busted
Now just sit down here, sit down here
I'm so upset with you I don't know what to do
You know my first impulse was to run up on you
And do a Rambo
I was about pull out the jammy on you and flat blast both of you
But I didn't wanna mess up this thirty-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled -- That's right chilled
I called up the bank and took out every dime.
Than I cancelled all your credit cards...
I stuck you up for every piece of jewelery I ever bought you!
Don't go lookin' in that closet 'cause everything you came here with is
packed up and waiting for you in the guest room. What were you
thinking?
You don't mess with the Juice!
I gave you silk suits, blue diamonds and gucci handbags.
I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce!
But now I can't give you nothing but advice.
Cause you're still young, yeah, you're young.
And you're gonna find somebody like me one of these days . . .
Until then, you know what you gotta do?
You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing,
hush puppy-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you
dismissed!
That's right, Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids, don't you know
that? You without me is like corn flakes without the milk! This is my
world. You're just a squirrel trying to get a nut! Now get on outta
here. Scat!
Don't touch that coat...
I use to love this video!
Ummm, no... Prince isn't really suspect at all. He just confounds our gender norms.
Whereas if we are defining "suspect" as "I kind of think he might be," then Ray-Ray is well beyond suspect.
I guess that same could be said about Michael Jackson then... ?
That, and (s)he's a warlock.
