I happened upon this gem in the book discard pile at the school where I teach:
I couldn't resist a train wreck...This is a direct quote from "Vanilla's Def Dictionary", Chapter 8, page 84:Word to Your Mother Ice has two definitions for this one. (1) Originally it was the phrase "word to the mother" on the street. But when Ice says it, he says "word to your mother." All of the black artists say "word to the mother," and in that context, "mother" refers to "motherland." The sentiment is, let's all live together. "Word to your mother," on the other hand means "always listen to your mother." That Ice...always one to uphold wholesome family values...so misunderstood...
