Different Color Dust on Old Records??

edited January 2006 in Strut Central
Typically I find that the color of the dust on records is grey. All I use to clean is a little bit of 70% isopropyl alc. However, some of my older pieces give/gave off a orangish rust color dust after a thorough clean. Is that oxidation? Or could it just be b/c those records were around orange dust earlier in their days? What is vinyl (...silicon?), does it rust?

Vinyl is made of sand and it doesn't rust. That's what the colored dust is - different species of sand. You probably have a lot of west coast pressings. The best way to remove it is to gently inhale it.
