Verizon depends on your local phone line infrastructure, which in BK usually means
is it more to do w/ the actual jacks themselves or the internal wires.
thanks big spliff.
I have Verizon so the reasons it can suck were explained to me in detail by an over-helpful technician. Overall bandwidth depends on how far you are from a fatpipe backbone and how many people in your area are also connected to it. Then another issue is the capacity/condition of the wires from the backbone to your building. The jacks and internal wiring are the least part of it and can be upgraded most easily. That said, I live in a PoS industrial building with crappy wiring and service is OK. DL is as fast as I need, upload notso, but I don't think TWC is much better in that respect either.
The worst thing about Verizon is the tech support is in India and they read to you from cue cards with totally fake sounding little americanisms so maybe you think they have a clue what a modem looks like.
Other than that: highly recommended (when you have no other options!)
I've had both DSL and Roadrunner...
Roadrunner has slightly faster pageloads but MUCH, MUCH faster downloads... I'd assume uploads would be about the same but I never do...
DSL you can pay for as much speed as you want, so if you want fast access but not blindingly fast access you can save a lot of $$$ if you take one of the cheaper DSL packages... something like $28/month (instead of $48)
EDIT: not sure how things differ in BK, I'm down south...
I've had both. Right now SBC is Roadrunning a "Super high speed upgrade deal!" that, according to the girl who pitched me, is "like supersonic fast" and is something like $20 a month right now. That being said, Roadrunner is generally faster but it is shared bandwidth, meaning if you've got a guy running a porn site on it next door then you're going to have that much less to work with.
I've been satisfied with SBC DSL for my websurfing needs. But I guess maybe if you download porn movies all day or something you might need the potential of absolute maximum speed, which seems to be cable.
