what is a good (free) program to convert video?

i need to convert some video from a mini-dat tape to a e-mailable file. what is a good program for this?

    AHEAD NERO 7 has a great video conversion tool. I can convert pretty much any media file (avi,mpg, mp4) to dvd, vcd, or other format. Also allows you to connect devices such as camcorder or other and dump to PC for conversion. got it for PC if you need it
