Tropicalia comp on Soul Jazz

Listening to the new Soul Jazz Tropicalia comp right now. Very nice collection of songs (nice to hear some of these without pops), great liner notes and pics and interviews with Tom Ze and Sergio Dias but it seems to me like it's all the usual suspects (Caetano, Gil, Gal, Tom Ze, Jorge Ben and Os Mutantes). Don't get me wrong it's great to have all these great tunes on one LP but I wish they had dug a little deeper. Maybe that'll be volume two. Thoughts?

Is this like the Gospel comp thread? Maybe they are out to make money from clothing stores, restaurants, hotel lobbies, and regular folks who don't know much about music but know what they like.

But, yeah, I'm sure ss could come up with a better/raerer one.

  • Yeah, pretty much the usual suspects. But Tropicalia was an oddly self-limiting movement. For some reason all the artists outside that core group are counted as MPB or Brazilian psych. Consider how close Marcos Valle was in tone, attitude, and production to the Tropicalistas, and yet he's never mentioned in the same context.

Does anyone have the Gutemberg Guarabyra record? I think he's actually on the 'Panis et Circenses' LP in some capacity, but I've never checked out his solo LP.

uhhh... what artists? that could be a tracklisting for pretty much any MPB comp ever made

I'm generally a fan, but I've had this same response to the last few compilations they did. (the studio 1 ones like roots were an exception) It's not they were bad, but I prefer LPs, and if the LPs are affordable or I already own most of the tunes, it's just not worth it.

cool if this means that members of crap indie bands will play this at hipster parties instead of their other Soul Jazz records that they bought that day, im all for it.

Ooooooooooops! JoeMojo beat me on the tracklist. Fast finger man.

Judging by the tracklist it's obvious they made this comp for those who know nothing about Tropicalia. For starters, it's a good comp though.

If there will be a vol. 2 they could include something from this record:

This shit is at the same level as any good Tropicalia/psyche record, but people sleep big time on it.

Tropicalia wasn't just a movement but a specific group of people who got together, named their movement and collaborated right?

Forgive me, I haven't read the book yet...

I think its really silly that they weighed it down with a bunch of Mutantes stuff... everybody who cares already owns or at least has heard that stuff...

Better check those with artist & song; they will give you a good idea on the comp.
