Sticker removal dilemmas

Okay, it took me a while to find out you have to use lighter-fluid... I pretty much ruined all record covers I bought upto 5 years ago. Horrible, horrible tears and marks abound. I was tidying up my studio today and I came across the following promotional still for a German sex education film on venereal diseases. Suddenly I remembered the sad dilemmas that I was facing before the advent of lighter fluid. After I found this still at the local market, I wanted to see her titties. I had to scrape away the sticker (that says: "doctors around the world are worried by the increase in venereal diseases") but by doing so I destructed the image underneath. As you can see I left the matter undecided before even having a good look at both her nipples:

So to all people new to collecting: buy some lighter fluid. I Would have, if I had known earlier...

Another handy technique is the hairdryer-on-the-sticker one. Melts the adhesive and you can usually just pull it cleanly off, providing it hasn't welded itself solid.

Works best if you remember to take the vinyl out of the sleeve first.

Used to use this technique on getting old griptape off my skateboards too (this was when a board would outlast its griptape, probably pre-1995).

    There you go. You're welcome.

  • I remember correctly now. I bought this still as it is. But that's a whole other topic that's probably been covered several times on soulstrut: marks from previous owners. Someone gave me this book a while ago that was compiled by by a guy called Mark Fischer who worked in a library. In this book he printed silhouettes of al items used as bookmarks he found in returned books.

He also made a list of different kind of items that were found: "At Southwest County Regional Library in Boca Raton, staffers swear a book came in with a strip of cooked bacon marking the reader's place. Or maybe a critic was marking a hammy passage".

I've found weird stuff in record sleeves too. Never any money though. But I've heard stories... I did stash some money (and also porn... oeps) in a recordsleeve once but I forgot which, seriously.
