I dont know too many US radiostations by name but I have been wondering what the reason for their names might be. WFMU is based in NYC and KDAY is on the westcoast. Are the names related to their locations in the US?Are their names given to them by the State along with a license and a frequency or how does it work? Are they abbreviations or just callnames? Thanks in advance.Dress

  • In the early days, most (not all) of the stations that started with a K were West of the Mississippi, and those that started with a W, East.

  • Thanks for the quick answer but are they abbreviations?

  • Some of them are abbreviations for corporations, locations etc, some are random. WFMU was originally the station for Upsala College, i.e. FM Upsala. Nowadays it seems that more of the call letters reflect format, i.e. KLIT (k-lite) etc

  • Alright thanks for help.
