ASR10 Modification

I figured this was as good a place as any to ask...

I have an Ensoniq ASR10 Keyboard, WITHOUT the SCSI port. Never mattered much to me because I only use it for an effects bus. It was inevitable... the floppy drive died, and now I can't load the system software.

I was poking around online, and the SCSI ports run for $350 (OOOF!), but I think i may have found a solution. please let me know if this won't work.

100 Meg Internal Zip Drive for ASR10:

and i think in order to use that, I'll need this:

Ensoniq ASR-10, ASR-10R, ASR-88 Kit

I really would like to get it up and running. It would be sad to have to sell her for parts. If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

If you're only using it for the effects it might be cheaper to buy a DP/4 to replace it with. I'm pretty sure they share the same effects.

    FYI, according to scsiforsamplers:

Will this kit work with my sampler even though I do not have the SCSI Interface?

Unless you have an Akai MPC2000XL or Yamaha A4000/A5000 and are buying the KIT-IDE, the answer is definitely NO. Remember that this is just the installation kit and it DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF A SCSI INTERFACE in your sampler! You MUST HAVE the SCSI INTERFACE INSTALLED in your sampler in order to use one of these kits or any SCSI drives. In some cases, this kit provides an internal SCSI connection inside of a sampler that did not come with such a connection originally but you still must have the SCSI interface board installed.

If you are not sure about your sampler, take a look at the rear of it - do you see a SCSI connector or plug? If not, then you probably do not have the SCSI interface installed and you would have to find one of those before you could use one of our installation kits or any of the SCSI storage products we sell. Contact us if you need help determining if your sampler is SCSI-enabled.

Yeah, just get a DP/4 or its little brother DP/2. Same FX algorithms.

yeah. i should have sold the asr and bought one of those a long time ago. too late now. i think it still might work as a midi controller :(

  • If you can't boot it up I don't even think it will do that.

For the price of the modification, you could buy a new ASR with SCSI already installed.

You could buy a replacement floppy drive for $80.

    http://www.chickensys.com/products/hw_iteminfo.php?hw_name=ASR-10+Replacement+Floppy+Drive

Or if you research the drive specifications, you would probably be able to find it cheaper on Ebay.

  • I just had to put a new floppy drive in an Asr X and found out that Ensoniq uses very common Sony drives.
If you open your Asr 10 up and copy the drive model number, then type it in Amazon, I'm sure you will be able to find the drive for under $20.

There are a few of them out there and I am dying to try one.

It would be fucking golden if I could replace the floppies in my EPS, Emax & S900 with card readers...

I'm not sure which one works best for the ASR but I do know there are a lot of success stories out there.
