I've refused to comment on the $700 bill as I don't understand the specifics of whats going on that could cause the economy to collapse (and I've not seen anything in the mainstream media thats attempted to explain it either)b,121b,121I'm curious if it was the entire 700 or if it was what I've been hearing the past few days though: a portion of that is made available and if necessary more can be provided

Your stats definitely lend to some head-scratching though

  • 250 up frontb,121100 more availableb,121and 350 okable by congress later onb,121b,121there will be some accountability, but paulson basically holds the money bag.

  • yeah, the only thing i have been able to wrap my head around for the past 8 years is that things are fucked up. and when i say fusk i dont mean fusk, fucquers.

font class="post"1b,121b,121f'real. unless anyone here has a PhD in Economics and wrote their dissertation on dealing with national level financial infrastructure meltdowns, how are any of us supposed to do anything other than just say "aight, whatever the fusk y'all say, but it sounds fuskin crazy".b,121b,121Figuring out how to solve such a massive problem for which any possible solution could have so many unconsidered consequences is a herculean task, so I just hope Paulson et al brought their A-game, and we'll see how it goes...

Knows that they're just planning to print that $700 billion up in new bills -> hello, (hyper-)inflation. b,121b,121They're causing the dollar to completely fail, so that they can eventually usher in the Amero. b,121b,121Save the economy, pfft...what a joke.

I watched the vote live on the BBC News Channel. It was weird watching the Republican nays stack up, while the dudes in the studio talked about how a lot of GOP Representatives were going to vote nay for "ideological" reasons, as if that kind of sub-Ayn Rand bullshit wasn't at least part of the reason for this mess to begin with. Nice if you can afford such luxuries.

Obama is on the BBC as he speaks live from Colorado right now, sounding mad presidential.b,121b,121As a democratic socialist who holds with the idea of a mixed economy and has witnessed the failure of trickle-down economics here in the UK, all of this looks to me like the logical conclusion of an unregulated free market - or, at least, one that hasn't been regulated properly. On one hand, I think it's to be expected that so many Republicans would vote on this as a point of principle, but on the other hand, you'd expect most of them to be cushioned against the worst of the fallout.b,121b,121Maybe it's something to do with my pinko gene, but I genuinely don't get this cheerleading for "small government". The state doesn't need to have total control of everything, but nor should it adopt a "who, me?" attitude in times of crisis. We saw the outcome of that after Katrina. I mean, either you run the country, or you don't. And if you don't, then F*ck off back to your ranch in Crawford, and let a man come in and do the Popcorn, nahmean?

font class="post"1b,121b,121Can you convince my parents to stop? They keep on looking even with a shaky financial situation...hard not to though when you are getting destroyed on taxes and can't write off any assets or expenses, the tax benefits are so appealing. But in this market I really think they should hold back.

It's going to be bad this week but once the bailout gets passed (IF it gets passed, which I think it will), we'll see a bounce back. Not 100% but enough to allay some fears.b,121b,121In the meantime though: buh bye Wachovia!

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah, sucks for him. THis probably isn't going to effect most Americans QUITE yet; the % of folks with any stock is in the vast minority. But if credit dries up for real? Everyone is FUCKED.

  • Wow. I think we're all going to remember this day for a long time (for better or worse I don't know).

  • So, as a liberal, I hate to say this, but is Nancy Pelosi doing a horrible job? Putting this up for a vote before knowing the were enough votes for it to pass seems dumb. 92 democrats voted nay. Shouldn't her and the whip gotten them on board, so she wouldn't have to bank on Bohners word.
