He was taken out of a lot of games late and replaced by utility player Dave Stapleton. <br /> <br /> After the Series blew up there were endless comments about how Stapleton should have been sent in, but apparently McNamara thought Buckner deserved to be on the field when the Sox, oops, won. Buckner was a valuable player for the Sox that year as a hitter and didn't deserve the goathorns.
