  • Hello - just rejoined

I've said this elsewhere but my favorite HC-ism was that Juvenile "Slow Motion" was the single greatest song of the 2000s, that will stick with me forever. He said something along the lines of "you backpack dumbasses will never understand the refined taste of the Juvenile listener" in, from what I could discern, a completely serious tone.

  • Donald Trump for President!

Impeachment was always a busy-box for toddleresque media types. The Senate is made up of who it's made up of, everyone knew what was going to happen, they should've just cancelled the fucking thing or sat on it.

The idea of having impeachment be a focused process on one goddamn phonecall instead of the cornucopia of myriad other crimes the man commits and publicly admits to every fucking day was the most ludicrous bit of empty skulled strate-gery I've ever witnessed. Yes, instead of drawing it out into a wide-ranging, ongoing media circus exposé of an investigation into every dump he's ever taken, every emolument he's broken, every security clearance he fucked up, his son in law's phone having been hacked by Saudi state security since before he even took office, the young girl he raped and threatened to have killed at Epstein's house in '92, that kind of thing, let's keep this laser focused on a single, discrete event so that we can get it done in the House nice and quick so the Senate can kill it in four days before the election's even underway. Then we'll be able to campaign on... what? Republicans having voted to support Trump? Like every other goddamn thing they've  passed since 2017 wasn't proof enough?

And by the way let's make sure the event we've chosen to investigate involves an actual clear-as-day case of corruption with Our Senile Guy of Choice we want to run against the current senile guy so that the diminishing slice of maniacs who pay attention to this day-by-day are reminded of Biden being Just As Bad every time they think of it, even if they started out on our side. With this impeachment stratagem, Dem leadership have outdone their own original colossal achievement of losing the presidency to this guy in the first place by running the only breathing human on earth who'd lose to him.

The only way to get him out is people power. To be honest I'm not sure elections even function anymore, but if they do they're the only chance I can see. The levers of government have been exposed as bullshit and incapable. Nominating another milquetoast tax-advantaged-savings-account-for-job-retraining means-tester will hand him another four years. If I'm wrong about that and somehow we get president Biden or Buttigieg or whatever, I won't be wrong about president Lindsay Graham or Tom Cotton or whatever after that, and then the sweet acid rains will come and it'll all be over.

  • current film strut

I am a big Taika supporter as a veteran of low budget NZ film (which of course means I met him at one point and gave him my homemade cookies) but I don't think Thor was Waititi enough to overcome the juggernaut it was a part of, so I didn't really get into it. I really want to see Jojo Rabbit to make sure he's still got the touch after that, but in a related note to your pregnancy news, our first child literally came the day we had planned to see it.
So I might have to stream it with a baby sleeping on my chest. Getting through a lot of movies that way these past weeks. Still gotta see the other current releases I haven't got round to - Parasite, The Irishman, Uncut Gems, that Clint Eastwood one about the '96 Olympics bombing. I welcome further opinions about any of those!!

  • What's been cooking in the kitchen recently?

My experience with tripe is that it smells like sick when it's cooking but can be fine to eat. Not sure that "fine to eat" makes up for stinking up your apartment though.

While my partner and I are in newborn mode we're very much frozen food dinners at the moment, but before it all went down (or came out, as it were) we did do veal and ricotta meatballs in slow cooked tomato sauce and froze'm. Also have a bunch of varieties of basil growing in the kitchen and keep having to trim them and freeze blocks of fresh pesto - lemon, purple, minette, genovese, lettuce leaf... we just mix all the breeds into one pesto though. Then you just toss it in the pan with your cooked pasta and some oven roasted cherry tomatoes, damn.

So like, homemade okonomiyaki is probably as exotic as we regularly do. But I find a lot of satisfaction in developing and perfecting a comfort food - we've worked on a homemade pizza dough raised to be as fat as Amoeba-adjacent Berkeley classic Fat Slice when I'm feeling homesick, my partner has been baking her own sandwich loaves every two weeks or so for many years and has a great recipe that has cooked brown rice in the dough to add some soft density to it, or learning to get the eggs in carbonara just right so they're still saucy and not quite cooked. That kind of thing.
