From Baltimore's Brewer's Art:

I love the last Dungen album! As for Baltimore, there are quite a few bands that I enjoy that are very much about being from Baltimore -- Beach House (Sub Pop), Celebration (formerly on 4AD, now self-releasing), Thank You (Thrill Jockey), Sma…

For those who like Word Wars, I would suggest reading, "Word Freak," by Stefan Fatsis. It's a great book. Definitely! I shouted it out in my post as well. Isn't there another Scrabble doc from around the same time that follows some of the same peo…

Thunder Soul The Water Front Chops Wheedle's Groove Bananas! (maybe even) My Best Fiend?... and plenty of others already mentioned like Anvil, King of Kong, When We Were Kings, Wattstax... I can't remember if the Scrabble doc Word Wars ended on a …

Was especially happy with the EX mono copy of Eddie Lockjaw Davis for $19.99 on the bay. Such a great record. Fantastic record, I still need a copy.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned After Hours, one of my absolute favorite NYC movies. It captures the vibe of downtown in the 80's perfectly IMO. After Hours seems to get more love on this site than King of Comedy, which puzzles me. I …

Most days I'd side with NY, but then again Sunset Blvd. is the closest thing to a perfect film I've seen, and The Long Goodbye isn't far behind.

"the Foot Fist Way" mildly amused me. Aha. I thought that guy generally steals the show when he pops up in supporting roles, so I was a little disappointed that a starring role from him didn't deliver more laughs. Mildly amused is about right.

I thought Teeth had very poor performances and was painfully one-note. Cabin Fever 2 (by the same director as House of the Devil, btw) is god-awful -- and that director has wisely disowned it due to studio meddling. House of the Devil is emphatical…

I would highly recommend checking out the Fingers "remake" - it's definitely not just an updating of the story to modern days in Paris. It has a very distinctive energy all of its own and Romain Duris is absolutely outstanding in the Keitel role. …

LOVED The White Ribbon. Saw it a month or so back and despite seeing dozens of films since, it's still very much in my mind. MOTHER was kinda meh to me. It had some gripping moments, but Memories of Murder did many of the same things better. Addit…

How is Greta Gerwig? She's been in many of the so-called "mumblecore" films that've played festivals over the last few years, as well as co-writing/directing at least one, but this seems like a pretty nice career jump for her.
-
Saw it last week during SXSW at the Paramount, the festival's largest screen. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Many band members present at the screening, magnifying the energy of the experience.
-
The film fest has been the most crowded yet. Even with the badge you need to line up for Alamo screenings 45+ mins in advance to guarantee a seat. Maybe that'll change now that the music portion kicks in. Last night at the awards ceremony several fi…

Also, do you have to have a membership to download from RS at all these days? Every time a hit up a RS DL link, it says "all servers temp busy right now, try again later". Is this just me? nah, me too. Rapidshare is worthless to me lately, going …

It took me several years to find a John Phillips Wolfking of LA in the field. I have found several of the Kendricks in dollar bins recently, but generally trashed.

I ride! I adore a few songs on each album and love the overall vibe. They are awesome people and I am psyched for their success.

R.I.P. I spent many an hour during my early teens in the library hunting down his uncollected stories. Haven't re-read anything by him as an adult, but as with so many of us, his books were a big part of my life growing up.
-
Very sad. Seeing him talk here in Baltimore a few weeks after 9/11 was a cathartic antidote to a lot of the neocon bullshit in the air. Definitely an inspirational person. R.I.P.

i think we all want to explain away the possibility that there could actually be beings from other planets who possess a higher technology than us and can travel those long distances from other galaxies to visit our planet. but why is that so far fe…

are there (m)any alien abduction stories that predate, say, the 1850s? Not talking about ancient pictographs/cave drawings/hieroglyphics that supposedly represent UFOs and aliens, but purportedly non-fiction narratives detailing being taken from thi…

private dealers will have to step forward but there's plenty of discussion of Bmore record stores (Normals, Own Guru, El Suprimo, True Vine) in this thread: http://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=1306960&an=&page=…

I've been meaning to start a thread seeking Chico advice. At his best, he's fantastic, but I find his catalog hard to navigate, as schmaltzy records like The Gamut come on the same label in the same era as winners like The Head Hunters. I ride f…
