I loved this movie when I first saw it 15 years ago or so, and have recommended it to many people since. I should perhaps revisit it before doing so again. in general I do ride for John Sayles into the early 90s, though. as an aside, I first …

I ride for rita lee Hoje ?? o Primero Dia do Resto da Sua Vida from start to finish (ugly cover aside), one of my favorite Mutantes-related lps: Its predecessor Build Up is probably better regarded by most Tropicalia fans, but doesn't do …

I saw it at SXSW back in March, and while it might not be a masterpiece from a filmmaking perspective, it definitely got to me (both intellectually and emotionally). I got a hell of a lot more out of it than I did Schanbel's biopic from the 90s. …

yes, the documentary is called Marwencol, and it's every bit as excellent as you'd hope it could be. It won the top documentary award at its premiere in SXSW 2010, and deserved it.

I bought the original and the update popped up for free using the in-phone app store. Loaded fine, looks cool. Thanks for the head's up!

Note the update at the end of the article: this is just the end of their manufacturing/marketing in Japan. Sony will apparently still have em made in China for sales in the U.S.

I used to enjoy these, and the first few sips still do me right, but now even nicer ones like Dogfish's end up tasting syrupy and cloyingly sweet halfway through one serving. Apricot, same deal.

favorite new album at the moment (especially the first lp in the set) (Dustin Wong's Infinite Love)

I'll definitely pick this up. The title track is actually my favorite, something so sad and beautiful about it, although Rosey and Johnny are both also amazing.

this for album w/o hesitation song is a lot tougher -- Mother, Mind Games, Oh Yoko!, Gimme Some Truth, Watching the Wheels... favorite song w/ the Beatles remains Dear Prudence

I enjoy this record a lot. Sounds very similar to Dungen to me, and I prefer the vocals on Dungen's record -- maybe because they're sparse and in another language; I'm pretty sure I'd prefer both bands if they were instrumental.

I live in Baltimore, in a small area called Stone Hill. It's roughly in the geographic center of the city made up of stone houses from an old mill area active from the 1840s until the mid-20th. I'm a 20-minute walk from downtown, and a 10-minute wal…

If you're looking for artful older fare I heartily recommend the Allan King box set just released by Eclipse (Criterion "no frills" sub-label). The late 60s / early 70s titles such as A Married Couple and Come On Children will thrill fans of the May…

Returns have been diminishing since Best in Show, but these guys are always good for some laughs, especially Willard -- and the topic is obviously a good fit.

after a drenching of turds the first few days, my festival experience really picked up -- I've liked or even loved about a dozen of the last 15 movies I've watched. If you liked SECRET SUNSHINE, Lee Chang-dong's POETRY is a must-see; ditto U…
