yes ableton has a full plugin suite, with 2 kinds of compressors. I use them alot actually for drums and other samples. You also can just render an audio file in there to be used in another host or whatever.

Not really sure about that. Most are in VSTi format. You most likely need a host like ableton, cubase, etc... You use cooledit though right? maybe upgrade to adobe audition so you can use plugins.
