yeah I'd put South of Heaven at the top. I still think Reign in Blood is an incredible album, but I don't think it's aged as well as SoH or even Seasons in the Abyss really. It's like Kill 'em All vs. Master of Puppets, the balls-to-the-wall non-stop speed is cool and was pretty mind-blowing at the time, but if I could only live with one it would be the more mature, well-rounded later album.

Reign in Blood is the bible of thrash metal. Plus I just think there's a lot of boring stuff on Seasons especially (although War Ensemble may be their best song). They're just more fun and better when they're playing really fast and shouting things like ENTER TO THE REALM OF SAAATAAAAAN!!!!!!!.

    I couldn't really do a Top 10 EVAR, even on the basis of artistic significance or sentimental attachment because, far too often, I'll dig something out that I haven't listened to for an age and be immediately reminded of how great it is. These are all records I can listen to and enjoy irrespective of mood, though;

Isaac Hayes - To Be Continued
Joni Mitchell - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns
    Bim Sherman - Miracle
    Nas - Illmatic
    The Band - The Band
    The Clash - London Calling
    Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Laura Nyro - Eli & The Thirteenth Confession
    The Beatles - Revolver

  • Reign in Blood isn't even the best Slayer album!

    South of Heaven, right?

I've been tempted to pick up their new one since I heard Lombardo is back.

Im curious, what is the best one?..I consider myself a Real Head when it comes to top shelf heavy metal, seeing how I have been a metal fan since the early 80s...I want to hear what it is and why...please let us know.

The new one is kind of a return to form, but there are still the gross nu-metalisms scattered throughout. But any Slayer album is going to be anti-climatic after Reign in Blood, only THE BEST FUCKING METAL ALBUM OF ALL FUCKING TIME AND THE ALBUM THAT ALL OTHER METAL SINCE THEN HAS TO MEASURE ITSELF AGAINST.

I just missed "Reign in Blood". 88/89 was my metal heydey, and SoH falls right in there w/ And Justice for All, Among the Living, How Will I Laugh and the first Danzig.

I can definitely understand why "Reign" is regarded as the definitive statement.

I am curious to hear which one hammertime was talkin' bout.

yeah I'd put South of Heaven at the top. I still think Reign in Blood is an incredible album, but I don't think it's aged as well as SoH or even Seasons in the Abyss really. I dont think a kill em all vs. master of puppets is an apt comparison...Reign in Blood is their Master of Puppets(2nd best metal Lp of all time BTW)...Reign is perfect...it is a complete distillation of every thing that is great about Slayer. The sound of that album is next level...It was a speed metal album recorded like "Let there be rock", a genius move by Rick...took all the reverb out of the guitars and made them dry and powerful, the songs are concise, the riffs are amazing...its perfect, it cannot be improved upon....sure, the next two got a little heavier and slowed things down, but that isnt what Slayer is the best at. They are about raw speed and power and Reign delivers.
