Joe Thomas vs. Gary Byrd ("Every Brother Ain't a Brother"-related)

I'm trying to determine which of these came first:
My assumption is that the Joe Thomas track came first, then Gary Byrd put his vocals on top of a short version of that instrumental. But I suppose it could just as easily be the other way around--Gary Byrd made the song, then Joe Thomas released it as an instrumental. Does anybody know the scoop here?

According to Discogs, Gary Byrd has the sole writing credit for JT's version, so I'd say that settles it. Thanks!
