It's so common I think people forget that it's slang.
The word 'dude' comprises roughly half of my daily speech.
'Dude' may have more meanings than any other single word, depending how it is said:
will never die.
Still use that one a lot
word.
the only time I heard it pre 2005 or so was from hippies and burnouts
