SOUL SINGER ELI ?PAPERBOY? REED MAKES CAPITOL RECORDS DEBUT WITH AUG. 10 RELEASE OF COME AND GET IT ?NPR
Listening to this right now - it reminds me of Al Green's last album, which isn't to say they sound identical but rather, both are trying to "update" an old sound to sound "contemporary" and to me, it doesn't work. Hard for me to put my finger on it, but it sounds like something for baby boomers who casually listened to Otis back in the day.
The music is fine - I don't feel the need to ever hear it again but it doesn't bother me either - but I don't know if that video could possibly be more cornball... cot-damnnnnn. Might as well be an Old Navy commercial.
Sounds like the 80's revival of the 60's sound rather than the actual sound they were apparently going for. Something about the polished sound and his nondescript voice. Struggling to describe it better this time of the morning.
It's really, really, clean cut. Hanson?
Oh yeah, finally got round to listening to the whole of the Kings Go Forth album and it might be that my expectations were different thanks to One Day but can't say I was feeling it. Sort of updated Terence Trent D'Arby rather than the retrosoul revival sound.
There you go, that's what the above sounds like, D'Arby.
