I'm not a redneck homophobe although I am from the city Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker made famous, Billy Graham has a museum, and Nascar is building a hall of fame. not proud of that but it is what it is.
This wasn't meant to be anti gay in any way. sorry I offended some of you. it was just an observation from a crazy dj night. I've played crowds with mixture of gay, straight, bi, record nerd, etc... just never been on some blue oyster bar shit. The place is a tiny lounge that holds maybe 150-200 people and the place was definitely over fire code. the party had been going for 3 hours before I got there so people were lit up and loose. I rolled in the place eyes red and zooted from the shrubs and I'm not going to lie, I was caught off guard like a mugh at the packed house of gay dudes. I still did my thing and played close to 2 hours of my 4 hour set of uptempo house brokenbeat. something I don't really play a lot of to begin with. So when i set off my dub reggae set the floor parted. I thought it was funny, so what. Some may think that makes me a bad dj, STFW. I had flyers out for weeks announcing my release party and told many people that they were going to hear some dub reggae records so I obliged for the people who came out to see me do so. The club owner knew about it and didn't tell me on purpose. He was laughing about it. It felt like sabotage, hence the name of this thread. It wouldn't have been a big deal if i knew what to expect prior to showing up. As for the "grab ass" comment there were a number of dudes crowding the booth, bumping records, and yes one guy tried to grab a cheek. not cool. as for my wife showing up. the kissing thing was a bit exaggerated and over the top but thats how I felt and i was very glad to see her. The next night I played at an art gallery event and there were a bunch of old people there and they LOVED the reggae I was playing.
I want to talk about more gay stuff. Can we not turn this thread into a reggae thread?
Yes.
As noted before, playing to gay crowds usually is more fun than str8 ones. I've got some stories, but I'm not gonna start.
oh shit you gotta share dawg... i bet it's something sweet like you banged 5 guys in the same night...
You go stud!!!!
Jeezus.
And to imagine the first real all-queer party I DJed I was told afterwards by the dudes throwing it that they were real nervous because they heard that most straight DJs were big homophobes. Gee, wonder why they thought that.
Last word about DJ'n gay parties: $100 tips. For playing Madonna.
First off, as far as the demographic that attends dance parties at dance clubs, most EVERYONE luuuurrrvvs Madonna.
Make that demographic the section that is homosexual, and guess what? Most EVERYONE luuuuurrrvs Madonna.
I've played probably 10-15 "gay" clubs, events, private parties. Beceause I'm, you know, a working DJ, and I like to DJ dance music to people who are, you know, dancing.
And so yes, I have gotten an inordinate ammount of large tips at these aforementioned events for playing 'ole Midge.
I have mentioned this to a number of gay friends and guess what? They laughed and appreciated the humor and truth.
