...in the style of Trinikas, Wendy Rene, Pearl Dowell, etc. I mean, I have a good handle on all the well known classics, but if there's some more obscuro stuff out there to discover (and there always is), I want to know what to be looking for.

Joann Zachery, Joann Garrett, Sweet & Innocence, Mable John, Big Ella, Betty Evrette, Betty Swan, Ruby Andrews, Barbara Lynn, Linda Cantrell, Gloria Jones, Maxine Brown, and so on and so on and so on.

  • Cool, I'm somewhat familiar with most of those artists. If you had to pick two or three drop dead amazing songs out of that list what would they be?

Joann Zachery - Down To Earth
Joann Garrett - It's No Secret
Mable John - It's Catching (Got this 45 signed yesterday!)
Ruby Andrews - You Made A Believer Out Of Me
    Barbara Lynn - I'm A Good Woman
Linda Cantrell - A Little Tear

More than 2 or 3 but hard to choose. Get them all.

Betty Harris is another good one. 2 quality 45s to pick up, which you probably know about, but just in case:

There's A Break In the Road

I'm Gonna Get Ya/Can't Last Much Longer

She got backing by the Meters and production by Allen Toussaint

  • 12 Red Roses is another good one by Betty Harris. Hey, I just remembered about this song by Friday, Saturday and Sunday that was on the We Eat Trains mix on here a few months ago. Anybody know how hard it is to find a copy of that?

Linda Tillery and Lydia Pense "Loves To Do It"

Plus, this one rivals James Brown's blood-curtling scream on "Mother Popcorn"

Also try Ann Sexton, Love N Stuff, um, there's more but I'm half asleep right now.

Dont sleep on Esther Morrow's LPs on Flying Dutchman or Fantasy.

a couple months ago shingaling and I put together these two volumes of nothing but 60s sister soul...all 60s, so the funk content is a little slim, but these things wail!!! we have been slangin 'em at our gigs...
