    This thread needs more music.

Ike & Tina "I Smell Trouble" from the Soul To Soul doc:

One of my favorite music clips ever and a good example of Ike . There's no doubt that he was a major influence on a lot of guitar players. Plus that whole breakdown with the vocal/guitar chase between the two is just so intense. The looks on their faces kill me everytime.

    RIP

lets list some fave Ike sides:

Those two solo LP's he did for United Artists are waaay underrated. 1972's Blues Roots and 1973's weird Bad Dreams.

Of course, A Black Man's Soul on Pompeii (1969) is killer instrumental funk.

One overlooked 1970 rock-influenced single on Liberty: "Taking Back My Name"/"Love Is A Game."

He had one excellent early-sixties album on Crown that is rare as all hell, Ike Turner Rocks The Blues.

HONORABLE MENTION: the Family Vibes' Strange Fruit on United Artists (ca. 1972)...this is Ike's Kings Of Rhythm under an updated, "hip" (for the seventies) name...just like Black Man's Soul, this too is instrumental funk, but this time it's got a more obvious rock influence...not 100% sure if Ike is on this one, but I'll bet he is.

Wasn't he behind Jackie Brensten's "Rocket 88" way back in the early 50's?

Yup, I think so. Dude was in on the stone ground floor of what became widely known as Rock & Roll. RIP.

  • One of the reasons people talk about his abuse is that in his case the woman he beat and terrorized actually has a voice.

And not only did the woman he beat up have a voice, but Ike himself didn't.

In the '80s and '90s, he'd turn up on all these talk shows and make a complete fool of himself, looking like forty days & forty nights at the crackhouse while saying some off-the-wall, inarticulate shit that did not go over. If anybody ever needed a spin doctor to tell him what to say, it was Ike. I remember seeing him on the Today show in '85...the host said something like "so, you've been arrested four times..." Ike: "no, seven times..."*** And when the inevitable question (did you beat Tina?) came up, he was unusually casual about it: "yeah, I beat her, but no more than any other couple," or something like that. He could have apologized or at least lied to save his name, but instead he just told the truth with no remorse. It was unsettling. Especially when he went on Geraldo Rivera's show and the question came up again, to which Ike responded: "you know, black people commit suicide by jumping out of basement windows." (?!)

That's why, when he came back for real in 2001 and started touring and recording again, it was good to see him back on target again. However, all those years of coke busts, embarrassing talk-show appearances and comebacks that never got off the ground caught up with him by then. The record collectors and musicians knew he was a legitimate legend, but to Joe Average, Ike Turner was just some drunk old wifebeater.

And even after he made his comeback, his asshole streak wasn't over; I was there at the Chicago Blues Festival when he flat refused to sign autographs for white people. But with that out of the way, I still believe in the music.

After checking out other e-groups to see what they have to say about him, I'd say Soul Strut is the only one that halfway gives his death any kind of respect.

He was a great musical talent, no doubt, but it seems right that he'll have this black cloud over his name forever considering the black cloud he put over Tina for so long.

I can't blame Tina for playing the "no comment" card to the press; she went out of his way to avoid him after she became successful in the eighties, making sure they weren't even in different ends of the same Frickin' region, so why stop now?

    RIP

I will ride for all the hits, and all the b sides. But especially the hits, from Sun, and Crown and Sue and UA and Kent and Loma and Modern and Liberty and Minit.

When I saw about 16 I hitch hiked to Santa Fe with my buddy and for a while we lived in the lobby of my brothers porn theater. He took a week off of showing porn to show Give Me Shelter. My buddy and I would watch the sunset on the roof while smoking a joint listening for the the Ike and Tina scene. Then we would go in theater, watch Tina rape the mic. We watched that scene 3 times a day for 7 days. We only watched the rest of the movie once. Thank you Ike.

Here is the closet I could find:

better or worse person than mike vick?

    ??????????

I'm sorry, Vick made music? I guess I don't rate a short football carrer equal to all the great music Ike made.

Check David McCallum around 9:30 leading the orchestra.

  • Awesome clip! Such a badass chick!

Is Tina Turner not everything you'd want in a woman?

I bet she was (probably still is) a fun time . She was really working that mic and it was easy to let the mind wander (hmm...) on that one. Shit, those old mamas have tricks up their sleeves, so I've heard. I could've gone that route once (some chick in her 50s [fine ole' bird] and I was around 25 or 26), but her age was too reminiscent of my moms .

    Peace,

    Big Stacks from Kakalak

P.S. I might give ole' Tina a ride today (given the chance) if I weren't retired!

DAMN!!! That bit near the beginning where two of the Ikettes dance out to the front and start moving in unison with Tina is amazing!

    Thanks for that!

A lot great people had shortcomings, as do all of us. These shortfalls do not diminish their greatness, do they?

i agree, but for some reason, with ike turner, people act like discovering tina and beating tina up was all he did. when JB died, no one said "hey, that wifebeater who thought he could outrun the cops just passed away"...i know what ike did, we all do, and what he did to tina was not right, but that doesnt mean im gonna burn all my ike turner records

I'm not buring my records, I'm just saying people get all sentamental as if Ike would have actual hung out with them or something. I didn't get all RIP about James either. I agree that all kinds of people do messed up things and I don't forget that just cuz they die. Part of my point of view is that if Bush dies everyone will be like "finally". No one will have anything good to say except SABADABADADA. I don't really feel bad when and older person who had a full life dies. It's just he way it is.

Bush can't sing or play. With his support of torture he has lowered our country to the level of a third world dictatorship, and you compare him to James Brown and Ike Turner. GOOHWTBS!
