Songs that REALLY make you cry

Interesting thread. Nobodies crying over raers. Strutters are real people.

I have another rather strange one: Stevie's part in "The Crown". Even when I play it at a club (which I do on the regular) it never fails to give me an immense rush. I mean his lyrics couldn't be further away from my life but I can't help but feeling with him big time.

I do recall so very well
When I was just a little boy
I used to hurry home from school
I used to always feel so blue
Because there was no mention in the books we read about my heritage
So therefore any information that I got was education
    Bums, hobos at depot stations
I would listen with much patience
Or to relatives who told the tales that they were told to pass ahead
And then one day from someone old
I heard a story never told
Of all the kingdoms of my people
And then how we fought for our freedom
All about the many things we have unto the world contributed
    You wear the Crown

We wear the Crown (Crystal Blake)
We wear the Crown (Stevie Wonder)

    Hey,

Here are a couple of my biggest tear-jerker joints:

-"Trouble of the World"-Mahalia Jackson (from the "Imitation of Life"-OST).
-"Mother Why"-Willie Banks & the Messengers.

    Peace,

america the beautiful, don't be so cold
how do you expecting our seeds gonna grow?
when you trap us in the ghetto
and show love to the other muthafuckers
while we right here starvin' at home
i'd cry if I thought that me shedding a tear might help
then again, me shedding tears don't help
i wanna call up to the president, just to see if he no help
let him know you up shit creek yourself
    we all sinners
facing the winter, with no socks and no shoes
in a position, where we all gon' loose
instead of penatentiaries, we gon' need more schools
what the fuck is we gonna do?
sit around and let the world pass us by?
waitin' on a message from the Reverend
and he ain't but another man, tryin' to get to heaven

the transcription really doesn't do it justice though.

  • Sorry to change the subject but does anyone else feel rage when they hear statements including the words "I wept"? It really makes me mad -- like can't you just say you "cried" and leave it at that, do you have to get so corny about it?

    Oh,stop weeping.

  • First time I heard one of the Tizeta's on the Ethiopiques Mulatu CD, I felt super emo.

  • Fantastic film (and soundtrack).
I just recently picked up The Mercenary. The only Corbucci western I've yet to see.

Ironically, my otherwise emotionally hard-as-nails friend (who shall remain nameless) ALWAYS used to start crying every time Rene & Angela's "You Don't Have To Cry" came on.
    Without fail.

Tommy Dorsey f/ Frankie- I'll Never Smile Again

    Ella- Dream A Little Dream

Tom Waits- Heart Of Saturday Night

Nice Tom Waits cut! Several of his songs have a way of making me tear up, even if they're not about the usual sad subjects. "Tom Traubert's Blues" has a line about a guy getting his Stacey Adams shoes wet that always breaks my heart, and "Soldier's Things" is a real tearjerker, too.

I'll add "Looking Into You" by Jackson Browne (don't know why, though; it's a song about visiting a house he lived in when he first moved out on his own) and "Kathleen's Theme" by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, possibly the only instrumental cut that has that effect on me.

    Saddest Tom Waits song- 'Martha'

another sad number- 'Your Daddy Loves You' by Gil Scott Heron is sad in a sweet, regretful way. 'Pieces of a Man' is just downright SAD.

  • Check out the OG version of "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" on the Cooley High soundtrack. By GC Cameron I believe. Also on one of his albums, though I can't remember which...

And a raer that makes me cry -- Bonnie Dobson's "Winter's Going" . Makes me hate myself for being a man.

Bob Marley - I Know (from Confrontation)

There's a 12 for that (with an excellent dub side), AnaS. Love the pace of that record, it's any easy transition to my reggae disco spins.

  • Wow you just blew my mind. Hard to find? I listened the Confrontation a lot when my mom passed away..I guess it's more of a sentimental listen...but it still gets me. Thanks K.
