    To many, that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were nominated in the rap categories at all was an affront. Hip-hop purists love a good debate about boundaries and who gets to police them. (Almost certainly, Macklemore was one of those purists, until he couldn???t be anymore because of his fame.) Last week, The Associated Press reported that the two were almost eliminated from competition in those categories altogether by subcommittee members who felt that they were, in essence, too pop ??? and, presumably, too white. Like a border militia tasked with passing judgment on infiltrators, those voters attempted a sort-of Grammy version of jury nullification, to no avail.

    The idea was, of course, preposterous. Part of accepting hip-hop???s growth into a pop music juggernaut is accepting that its edges are fuzzier than they once were. ???The Heist??? is undeniably a hip-hop album, though Macklemore???s songs have more in common with those by rappers like Flo Rida or Pitbull, dance-music-friendly artists rarely heard on traditional hip-hop radio. But Flo Rida and Pitbull are not white.

    Bey's booty has gotten so much air time, it was no thing to see it one more time (you can say that a la Daft Punk if you so wish). It made me uncomfortable watching those two on stage....and not in the same way it makes me feel funny on the inside watching the electricity and heat between the real Ike and Anna Mae when they performed on the same stage. More like watching bad forced performance art ??? like that Picasso Baby disaster.     I loved the Daft Punk, Stevie, Chic performance and fully appreciate Stevie's non lip sync'ed voice cracking. The audience's awkward awful dancing was awful and awkward.

    what happened to all the graemlins? I remember when i created the "5 pager graemlin", there was a dude said it was pointless as it would be infrequently used as threads don't often go that long. well guess what? 5 pager mofo!

    Some people love to talk about how homoantagonistic black popular culture is, particularly rap and r&b, but I have this theory that part of the reason - if not the main reason - gay rap and r&b performers choose to stay closeted is that they worry it'll be the only thing they get asked about for the rest of their careers.

    Conversely, I remember once reading an interview with Gary Burton wherein he observed that nobody ever asked him about his sexuality.     I can't say the first thing I think is gay spokesperson! when I think of Frank Ocean, but he does occur to me given his (Grammys) journey, and that he lives it while Macklemore gets congratulated for it.

    I heard a good interview with comedian AL Madrigal back when Thrift Shop was getting popular. He made the point that only well off people would think thrift shopping is "cool". He said he grew up poor and had to wear thrift shop clothes and would never do that again if he could avoid it. It seems fun when you have options but if it's your only choice it's not so fun.

    I've been reading all this.
    I watched a little.
    I am not up on new music or artist, so I defend no one.

    But there is nothing new about white rappers.
    Doesn't the strut still ride for the Beastie Boys?

    Is the hate because he is a white rapper?
    Or is it because his music is popshlock?

    The store, Value Village, where the video for that hard ass rapp was filmed is on my evening neighborhoodwalk locationlist. My ex-girlfriend says it smells like diesel fuel (um no, bitch, it's creosote). I never find anything in there, but I still visit regularly. Just to spite her.

    I don't really know Macklemore's story, but he seems too old. And are you sure he's from Seattle? Because I've never heard anyone other than some no-phonk-having Brittmans call the Value Village a "thrift shoppe." Ayo bruv dingdonger at the thrifts innit. They're sometimes "thrift stores," but I swear they're most commonly called "secondhand stores" here. "Value Village" is kinda the Escalator Kleenex of them too.

    Am I completely not knowing the Whyte Ledge here by not talmbout the socio-political-racialistic ramifications? The only thing that seems noteworthy to me is I'm still hearing this conversation. Once it stops, rapps dies, right?

    Rap music really works best from the bottom up. Always has. I guess the underdog thing I can root for with these guys is they're keeping all their money.

    But srslytho who gives a fuck about a goddamn Grammy?

    I think it would've been easier for everybody if Jethro Tull woulda took it.

    I didn't realize you've listened to his albums.

    For the record, I haven't. Not a single one. I've never even heard "Same Love" in its' entirety. I've only heard "Thrift Shop," that sneakerhead song and that "hands up!" song and I would not classify either of those as "really, really bad," dude. (Sneakerhead one is a little corny though, but the sentiment is cool.)
