The song's lyrics lose something when sung in the third person like that - "HE is a lineman for the county"???

John Bishop for a nice lush, funky instrumental take.

For the longest time, I figured that if this song was a hit with Glen Campbell, it had to be wack. I mean, really some bullshit toy-ass logic on my part but I'll cop to that.

I was listening to The Meters' version of this earlier tonight and that got me curious to dig around into the song's history and what not and I came across a review that described the song as the most perfect pop song ever (or something to that effect). I don't know about it being THE best? But it's pretty fucking perfect, regardless. I think the fact that it can be covered in practically any genre and still sound great is a testament to Webb's songwriting genius with it.

And going back through this thread, I do have to concur that Sammy Davis kind of kills it here.

I love this song. The Meters version is pretty tremendous, but Smokey Robinson also has a great version. The Sammy version is a little too busy for my tastes, the song has all of these nice minor key build ups that I think he adds too many rococo Sammy touches to.

Whilst the Glen Campbell can't be bettered, Brian Bennett did a very nice faux-funky-lite version that pops up delightfully on my iPod at opportune moments and I have a soft spot for the Feliciano vocal histrionic take.
