Yeah I like the Wayne Mcghie.

Others that I can think of

    Dorothy Ashby
    PAPUDINHO
    Erma Franklin
Rex Garvin & the Mighy Cravers

Oh and I like The Intruders one as well.

Isaac Hayes and Glen Campbell are running things as far as this song is concerned. All the other versions are just album-track filler.

Worst "Phoenix": the Mad Lads, who tried WAY too hard to "soul" it up...

  • William Bell

    Mighty Doug Haynes

    The Guinness Casanovas

    Senor Soul

    The Escorts

    Doris Duke

    Profile

    Erma Franklin

    Charles Kynard

    The Main Ingredient

In no particular order. So hard to choose a favorite, there are elements of each one that I really like a lot...Mighty Doug Haynes is though. And the first 20 seconds of Willie Tee is my favorite 20 seconds of any version.

ha! now you got me curious - what did he sing, in place of the original lyrics?

'cause that song tells a story, it aint just words strung together to rhyme. so if some jamoke just randomly decides to "sing their own schitt" 2 this tune, it's either gonna be a classic or a colossal trainwreck. or both simultaneously!

Thanks. Yeah, it's like an ANSWER to "Phoenix" more than the song itself.

And note that he's singing over the backing track to Erma Franklin's version. (Isn't that whole album basically Doug singing over Brunswick backing tracks that have been used before? Must have been a tax deduction scam for somebody...)

  • I just got a Johnny Rivers version thats pretty nice.

  • Hi SS folks.

I'm a long time lurker, and I finally told myself I should ask all the knowledgeable people on the board for something I have a hard time to locate.
The mix you'll find at the bottom page of the following link is a selection of mostly obvious joints put together by Adrian Younge.
BUT , there's this cover of "By the time I get to Phoenix" which seems pretty obscure.
Does anybody know it, and feels ok to give a name away?
Many thanks by advance, I'll try to do my best to share stuff in the near future.
    Here's the link:

    Cover comes @ 7"44.

    Thanks!

I am not crazy about the song and don't look forward to cover versions.
So I agree with P33 GC IH.

Not a full blown cover, but I always liked the Wichita Lineman/By The Time I Get To Phoenix medley on the Love Is Blue lp by The Dells. I, like you, got all excited when I saw the Phillwith2l's and realized that this thread was from 2009....aww schitt.

Last years a friend dropped the New York City version at a jam and during the first chorus everyone was looking around like WTF. But then it dropped and the place was poppin'. I was surprised it went over so well.
